I seem to have solved my oil burning problem

i'm still calling bullshit on this, i know people that run the cheapest oil and filters they can find with no where near your amount of oil consumption, and they have over 100k on the ticker...

You can yell bullshit all you want. Different oils have different properties. There have been many people on this forum who have switched from one oil to another and have reduced or solved their consumption problem or cold start knock.

Last year we got a good deal on Quaker State by the drum. (We run 80 or so pickup trucks, so there are lots of oil changes) Some trucks that had no history of oil consumption between changes (more than a qt between 5000k intervals), began to consume oil. We tracked it and the higher the mileage on the oil the higher the consumption. UOAs were performed on several samples and no excess fuel was found, so rule out dilution. OCIs were adjusted downward. Not every vehicle was affected. GMT 800 & 900 models were both included. Cold start knock was noted in several vehicles that had not exhibited it before. Next batch of oil we went back to Pennzoil Platinum. Cold start knock subsided and consumption dropped back down to normal expected levels. UOAs improved and OCIs were adjusted upward.

We got oil at a cheaper price per qt. but we used much more of it. Had more lost time changing oil. In the end it cost us more.

Don't get stuck on one oil. Try others if you're having issues. you might just clear your issue up.

It is possible that the brand of oil fixed his issue....My 2001 Silverado would tick like crazy on cold start up UNLESS I used Royal Purple. Tried Pennzoil, Mobil 1, Quaker State and they all allowed it to tick. Nothing different in oil weights either, 5w30 synthetic in every brand. For some reason, it liked Royal Purple.

My 2010 Silverado is fine with Mobil 1, my dad's 2008 V-Max will tick on start up unless he uses Royal Purple....Why, I don't know but that's what happend.

Not sure how you guys afford to use Amsoil in your motors. 120$ for a case of 12. Im spending $26 for a 5qt jug of Mobil one at Walmart. I would love to use Amsoil, it's just so much $$

How often do you change your oil? How many miles? How many times per year?

Not sure where you shop but you can get Amsoil 12qt. case for around $70.00-$75.00 around here.

I hope you are also buying an extra quart along with your 5qt. jug from Wal-Mart because your truck takes 6qt. of oil.

Amsoil has 3 different oils, between $6 and $10 per qt. $71-$120 for 12qt. case

I think amsoil is a ripoff but after I switched to synthetic oil I stopped burning a liter per 5000km plus I run to 10000km now.

It has additives that work on seals supposedly to keep them from leaking. At least that's what the advertising says. I'm sure there are other subtle differences too.

I remember about 8 years ago, I tried a Pennzoil high mileage in my '80 truck. It started using more oil between changes. I switched back to regular with no "special additives", all was well again.

I have used Valvoline Max Life in two different high mileage vehicles now and it curbed both of their oil burning issues.

Not really sure the difference with the high mileage stuff, never bothered to use it. I have always just used synthetic oil no matter what the mileage was. had over 200,000 miles on my 1989 sierra and never used a drop of oil between changes.
