I used to get the 3M tint but now I get Solar Gard. It's a little less and holds up just as well. I think next time I'm going to do 5% in the back and keep doing the 20% up front.

The shop I go to uses Solar Guard. I've had it on 4 of my vehicles and I'm happy with it.

You know what, I just looked and yesterday when I took my girls '11 Malibu in, I had them go with Solar Guard. My truck I know has 3M tho.

Yep the Solar Guard has held up for me and has a lifetime warranty I think. Nothing better than tinting all side and rear windows. Stock tint is not dark enough and tinting the front only will not match the rear perfectly. It doesn't cost much more to do them all. I guess if money is tight only do the 2 front sides but it doesn't look as good to me. But to each their own.

They used lumar? Or something is that good stuff

Never heard of it but that doesn't mean it isn't decent stuff.

I've heard of it and seen it, but I have never used it or know anyone that has. I have no idea on the quality either, could be crappy, could be good.

I agree that the factory tint isn't dark enough, and sometimes it's hard to match it. So, I just put 5% over everything...and it matches pretty good cause it's solid black.

Can you get away with 5% on the front in IL?

I was able to get away with it where I lived when I was 16, almost 8 years ago, but I can't anymore. :tear:

Legally, no...not even close. I think 35% is the max on front windows. However, I live in a small town, and the cops don't really worry about it. Plus, I drive country roads to work every day, so I don't see cops all that much. Maybe it's a small town thing....but, so far, so good! :fingersx:

That's awesome! That's how I got away with it back in the day. Now, even the small town inspection shops will not pass me if it's not legal. :nonod: I have even pulled up with thew windows down just hoping, and they will roll them up to check them.

Totally illegal to have the front windows tinted in Michigan so when I have my front's done, I'll have them done to match or just a shade lighter that way I don't have Jonny Law pulling me over all over town.

I had Llumar installed on my G35. It's a top tier film that's metallic based and not pigment based. By metallic, I don't mean the mirror reflective junk. Supposedly the metallic based films hold their tint longer. I've had the car for 8 years and not noticed any problems. When I tinted my last truck (done at the same place), they told me that the pigment based film will match the factory tint better, so I told them to do that. I didn't have any problems with that either (had the truck for 7 years) so I'm not sure it really matters all that much. I don't recall what brand film that was.

That's a bummer dude. We don't have to get our trucks inspected here in IL.

We don't have to get our's inspected here in Michigan either but if a cop pulls you over, they can ticket the hell out of you for having the side front windows tinted on any vehicle in this great State of Michigan. Sucks.
