what type of rear end is best for me...... ?

Hello all..

I'm looking to replace my busted factory G80 locking diff. It works like an open diff now.

I have an 02 Silverado 5.3L with about 110k.

At first I was going to buy the Detroit tru trac locker, but im wondering if its best for my needs.

I have a parking lot I have to leave from a couple times a day that is horrible.

Its heavy traffic on the road, the road is uphill from the lot, if it rains, the spot I have to sit in is covered with down washed sand and to add, the turn is a little sharper then a normal 90 degree.

So in the rain, that darn right tire spins like crazy and makes it dangerous to step out into traffic.

On dry days, I normally don't have a problem unless its still real sandy.

I need something that will put power to the ground through both wheels while turning.

but i'd prefer something with out clutches if possible, unless the clutches are made to last a very long time?

Any help is greatly appreciated. 1/2 the time I have my daughter in the truck and it really makes me feel nervous.

Thank You!

If your looking to avoid clutches, the tru-trac is the only limited slip thats set up like that. Outside of that you'll be looking at some type of locker, be it mechanical, electric, or air. The price goes up pretty high once you leave the limited slip realm. Personally I perfer the way a clutch type posi(limited slip) works. Basically you get 50 percent power to both wheels all the time. The tru-trac works off of a bias ratio, which allows it to transfer more torque to the wheel with better traction. The only situation the tru-trac has issues with is in conditions where one wheel has zero traction, such as ice. When this happens the carrier cannot transmit any torque to the other wheel. I've heard you can drag the brake a little to fix this issue, but if your trying to get going or get out of the way taking the time to think and drag the brake may not be the best option. A clutch type limited slip even if one wheel is spinning away, will still transmit the proper amount of torque to the wheel with traction. Really the best thing you can do is research, research, research, and find the one your most comfortable with. There are tons of articles and information out there on both types, along with plenty of forums about who's usuing what and how they feel about it.

I would avoid any true locker, you would be asking to break something doing that maneuver on a regular basis.

I had the Eaton Limited Slip Differential (clutch based LSD) installed in my 2003 Silverado. It was very smooth and would do what you are asking for. My roommate at the time installed a Detroit TruTrac in his Silverado a couple months later. although mechanical in nature it would respond every bit as smooth as my Eaton LSD.

Knowing this and knowing that clutches may wear out I would install an Detroit TruTrac if I were to do it again today.

I think the Detroit tru trac might be my best bet.

Now I just gotta find out what fits and the best price.

As well as the install difficulties.

Thanks all

Reviving this old thread.. and I just realized its in the wrong section. If an admin can move it I would appreciate it.

I'm finally getting ready to buy a TruTrac but... How do I find out which one I need?

I have a 10 bolt cover but is there a way to tell the splines and length on my truck without digging into the old rear end?

I did the compnine RPO lookup and it shows the gears are 3.42 and does NOT have the G80 code listed (But my glove box does)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You need the GM 8.5/8.6 30 spline part number 913A481

I moved the topic. I found the best price on Amazon, Jegs will price-match Amazon. I use Jegs at times because with my military discount it is sometimes cheaper than anywhere else

Thank You for moving it!

I found it on Summit for 435 with a $30 rebate (Taking it to 405 and free shipping)

Seems like the best deal I can find for it.

Now, I better start researching the replacement. I don't want to screw this up and unfortunately if I want to shut my garage door, I have to be sure and get this done in a day.

I'm very mechanically inclined, just have not dealt with gear alignment in a long time.

But i'm keeping my stock 3.42 gears, so that should make it a bit easier.
