b-tuck Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Hey I'm new to the site I own a 2001 gmc 8.1 I have a chip on it but its really old I wanted to get a new one for fuel mileage and i was wondering some ideas on reliable chips I love this truck and want the right chip for it. THANKS!
jdubub Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 If I were you, I would throw the chip out and go with a programmer like superchips, or even better a custom tune from blackbear performance. I would go with the Autocal. Welcome aboard
becker87 Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Welcome! A custom tune will be your best bet for the best milage and performance.

Prokopchuk_9 Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 ^^^^^^ what he said. Black bear, Nelson, Wheatley or if ur in Canada Paynton performance....same price better results
b-tuck Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 Ya there is a super chip on it right now its pretty old I got the truck from my buddy I don't want that chip that is on it. What all does the tune up do for it?
Prokopchuk_9 Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 They will use software called EFI Live, or HP tuners...it can shut off power enrichment delay, shut downstream 02 sensors down, advance your timing, play with all the torque management stuff, set shift point, torque converter strategies, shift firmness...pretty much above and beyond any "canned" tune is capable of...many other things plus data log as you drive. So you can check on how your engine is functioning as well. It's actually the smarter choice, I've also heard the 8.1 really wakes up from a good tune...where are you from?
b-tuck Posted April 4, 2012 Author Posted April 4, 2012 I'm from Utah I'm new to working on my own stuff so I'm still in the learning process but i do wanna tune it to see if it helps mileage at all. Do you know prices on tunes?
yukon25008.1 Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 Hands down an in person tune from justin at blackbear performance.. youll be amazed the results you get..no handheld tuner will come close..Trust me! ive had 2 8.1 trucks custom tuned in person by him and on the trip home i picked up 3-4 mpg..besides the slight performance increase..what was most important to me was the things he could remove..like the 30sec full throttle delay! and also cleaning things up the the motor/truck ran bettter, more efficient. the autocal and data logging tune is good but in person is the best way to go!
