Anyone have a good experience with coverking, shear comfort, or other slip-on covers? The custom, supposedly "secure fit" covers, not the generic "universal fit" covers.

Or is there a place I can order replacements? I've been watching eBay for a set of factory cloth take-offs but no luck. '99-02 ext cab with dark grey interior. Dealerships probably want an arm and a leg for new covers. I don't care if they are used in and in good condition.

(No point in leather...gotta spray them, avoid getting them wet, can't leave them in sunlight, freeze my backside in winter, etc. What's the point of leather in a truck?)

Nothing like the factory covers, they are NOT replacements. They are made vehicle specific, won't be like the universal ones. They fit like a glove.

Thanks, I'm looking at materials now.

Velour

pros: cloth-like, not too hot if parked in sun

cons: always looks "messy" due to directional fibers

Leatherette (vinyl, basically)

pros: durable, waterproof, easy to clean, can look stock

cons: hot if left in sun

Neoprene

pros: easy to install, easy to clean

cons: not breathable? hot if left in sun?

Cordura

pros: very durable, waterproof, not hot if left in sun

cons: uncomfortable, shows wrinkles

Cloth

pros: easy to clean, not hot if left in sun, can look stock

cons: not waterproof, no different properties than my factory seats

Mesh

pros: breathable? (but mesh always makes me sweat)

cons: not waterproof

I found someone selling a seat of replacement (used) front seats with exact same cloth pattern and options for $550 shipped. That's about the price of 2 rows of vehicle-specific seat covers. I don't plan on selling the truck for a very long time, 10 years or more if I'm careful, so resale isn't my primary concern. And I don't know if the used front seats' material is faded from UV to the same extent as my back row.

Stay away from Neoprene, they start to stink and need to be removed to clean properly.

If you are looking at leatherette, try Clazzio they have both real leather and the fake stuff.

I have "Seat-Saver" covers on my CC. They stay put and are easily removed and machine washed.

Thanks everyone!

I decided to go with the used factory seats. I'll sell mine as used, damaged to reduce total cost of the project. Seat covers are still in my plans. (I didn't expect to be spending the whole amount up front to fix the seats, but this opportunity won't knock again.) This way if worse comes to worse and I have to sell the truck, I won't have to say "Yes, we put covers on because the seats have holes in them."

I appreciate the warning about Neoprene - definitely something to avoid.

The seat saver covers look okay but...they look like seat covers. That's not bad but I do have a dash cover (fixes my dash rattle) and a steering wheel cover (for comfort) so the interior is looking a little busy. Then again maybe seat covers of same color would tie it all together - something to think about, at least.

The seats arrived and now they must be cleaned.

Anyone who buys used seats (or a used vehicle) should really consider cleaning the seats. I took pictures of a partially cleaned seat but my phone's camera loses too much detail to even show the fabric pattern, let alone where it's clean or dirty. But trust me, it's a night and day difference!

Basically the only things necessary to clean cloth seats are: wet/dry vac (with upholstery tip), hot water, carpet cleaner (test first!), and a very soft scrub brush (applied gently). Mix some carpet cleaner into hot water, apply just enough to get cloth into light lather with the brush, and then vacuum the water out of the seat. I found it helps to fill a second bucket with plain water, to rinse the brush off between uses.

The water I pulled back out of these things looked and smelled horrible. Even the seat belts were filthy.

Someone said cleaning might remove stain-guard treatments from the seats. After 12 years any original protection is probably gone anyway.

With the seats not yet installed, what stain protection can I apply myself? Anyone have good experience with a particular product?

I have the Coverking neoprene, but I probably wouldn't do it again. The only reason I'll skip them next time is that they my back gets hot in July/Aug around here, as they don't breathe.

Posted a pic/opinion here: http://www.gm-trucks...howtopic=141468 . Fit is tight. In fact, folks question me when I say they're covers.

Yeah, I sweat a lot in the summer; non-breathable stuff is out.

Your pics look great! I'm definitely going with seat covers at some point ... just not a priority right now.

Anyone have experience with the durability of fake leather (i.e. PVC)?

For example:

Do they smell bad if the sun hits them?

Can I take a soft scrub brush to them without ruining the material?

Do they wear out faster than leather?
