What gear for towing?

Recently purchased a '12 1500 with 6.2/6spd/3.73s. I will be towing my camper (5500lbs) to Indy on Memorial Day. What gear should I use?

I am coming from a 07 1500 6.0/4spd/4.10s. Towed the same camper in 3 gear with TH on.

5500 pounds for that setup is nothing. Like stated above, let the truck do the thinking for you. The 6.2/6 speed combo will make your life easy.

I agree that you'll be fine just putting it in Drive, turning on the Tow/Haul mode, and letting that big dog eat. However, if you find that it's having trouble holding 6th gear, then just put it in M5. That's what I do with mine to keep it from jumping back and forth from 5th to 6th.

That 6.2/6spd going to make that much difference? I am kind of excited to see what is going to do now. In my old 4spd, it always hunted between 3 and 4. Tranny temps increased when using 4, so I started using 3 with TH. I saw much lower tranny temps. It went up hill easier but with higher rpms.

You aren't going to know until you try. But like most other said, start with Drive and TowHaul mode. If it shifts around too much, then knock it down a gear. I pull my 5000LB camper with my 2011 5.3/6spd/3.42 all across Western NY. The only time I manually shift is when I am climbing a long hill. Otherwise for all the rolling stuff, just let drive do its thing. No problems or concerns so far.

Just towed my boat (~5000lb) for the first time with my new 6.2 NHT. 65-70mph in on fairly level hwy in drive without tow button and it held 6th fine the whole time. Trans temp steady a 120f, dropped it to manual 5th for a long gradual uphill as I neared my town and trans temp topped at 126. This truck rocks!

Yes, the 6-speed is a glorious piece of mechanical artwork. I went from an '07 1500 6.0/4 speed/3:73 to my current '09 1500 6.0/6 speed/3:42. The difference is like night and day...and that's with the same engine. You're also getting a nice bump in power too....so I think you'll enjoy the heck out of towing with that new rig!
