Have a silverado 1500 noticed last month that had really loud sound from front end. had some one look at it and said it was wheel bearing. its been fine now made no noise or anything. Yesterday my dad was driving it and when he went to turn left made the noise again. did it for a little while then stopped. my dad thinks its the axle shaft. how hard are they to replace in a truck

Never replaced a shaft on my truck but I'd be sure you don't have a hub bearing going out. These trucks are known for weak hub bearing. Jack the front end up and verify before putting any parts into it. Hate to see you replace a shaft for the bearing to be bad.

how loud is the sound? is it a grinding noise or what?

if so, like 06 sierra said, its probably a hub

I had a similar snapping sounds a few years back from the front of my truck. At first it happened once and I thought something got wrapped around an axle and got spun off as it happened and was gone again that quick.

Then it happened a few days a week later and then it was happening almost every trip, took it to the shop and they threw on a couple of new hubs (new bearings) and the ole dog was good as new.

i dont know what it is about the 03-06 GM trucks.. its like every one goes through a hub around 100k. both of my hubs were shot around 105k

Just went out drove it around lot of left hand turns and it wont make the noise, checked the bearing and its fine and so is the axle shaft. any ideas on what it could be?

Nope its no that, really hard to left or right wont make the noise when i want it to,, boots are fine.

Boots may be fine but how about the jointt under the boots?...........Since we can't hear exactly what's going on your best bet is to take it to a garage and have it looked at. Not much anybody here can do for you at this point.

well it finally went today, the passenger side wheel bearing. it did not sound good, had metal shavings come off of it. lucky only was 15 miles from home so made it home ok.
