Can I do anything about gun registration?

I used to own a S/W .357 model 19. It had the 4" barrel. It was a great gun. A friend of mine who used to work for the CHP took the gun and nickel plated the trigger and ejection rod, installed target sights, Pachmayr grips, and adjusted the spring so you would have to have a steady hand to hold the hammer at 3/4.

A really nice gun.

Anyway, that was years ago, 32 to be exact.

When I bought the gun, I thought I was supposed to register it. I find out now that was a big mistake. :banghead:

When I sold it back in the early 80's, I asked the police who I was allowed to sell it to and they said "Anyone", just get a receipt for the sale, which I did.

I still have the bill of sale, and last year when I checked the police records, I was still the registered owner of that gun.

How can I get this gun out of my name? I live in the lovely gun loving state of California. :shakehead:

Yes, I took it to the police to run the serial number and they said to keep it a little longer. I told them it has been 30 years, and they said to hang on to it.

Yes, I sold it in California.

And I did sell it to one of Mexican Nationality. :noway:

At the time I even asked the police if it was alright to sell it to someone who may be an illegal alien and they said that was fine, just get a bill of sale.

I do believe that the new owner did not want the gun registered at that time.

I am sure I would not have any way of contacting them now.

I just did not know that the gun registration would last the rest of my life until it is registered by someone else.

Just hang on to it in case something happens. I.E. its used in a robbery or something. Other than that I wouldn't worry about it. Also in the future, skip registration, not worth the trouble.

what agency is the gun "registered" with? If it is a state database then contact a state official for that particular department, if it's the Sheriff write a letter to the Sheriff stating that you have sold the firearm and would like to cancel the registration. Either way do not release the original bill of sale, provide copies and offer to bring the original in if needed in person.

Just like vehicles, trailers, and everything else that requires registration. The only way it can come back to you is if it is recovered. File a report with the police, and ask for a report number. And keep the bill of sale. You did get real name and address on the bill of sale didn't you?

Don't sweat it. It's going to stay in your name.
I guess in practice it essentially does. Even if they cancel the registration you are still the last registered owner.

Place a copy of the sales receipt in a bank safety deposit box.

And keep a copy at home.

What's the worst that can happen?

The Homeland Security in conjuntion with the locals bust down your door at 2:00 AM? Pin you and your family to the floor. Tie wrap hands and feet. Drag you away?

You are still innocent. In a few hours you will be let go. No sweat.
