Was talking with a couple guys today and engines, fuel, oil, and additives came up in conversation,

the snap-on guys said he swore by amsoil and loves it and also said that the lucas oil additive is one of the best out there..Has anyone had any luck with the lucas..And how do you guys feel about the amsoil VS mobil1 oil? He also said the he felt chevron techron was a very good fuel additive/cleaner. What fuel additive do you guys deal with? And have you seen positive results?

I mentioned the motorvac service and the one guy didnt know what i was or what it did, and the snap-on guy also said that that was a great service if done right with real results...Then gas came up and everyone said they see better power and mpg,s with name brand fuel VS no name...turkey hill, giant etc.... Any input on that?

I used lucas oil treatment in my 1998 and got ride of my cold knock, and use it in my 79 ford plow truck to lessen the oil burn smoke. Gm recomended chevron treatment for use back in 98 for a cleaner with the fuel injectors it the 98. I use lucas grease also. I had great luck with both

My 2 cents ......

M1 vs Amsoil : Both are very good, I've used both since about 1985. I like the Amsoil a little better but it is MUCH more expensive.

Lucas Oil Stabilizer : I haven't used any since the 1970's when STP oil honey was the thing to put in your engine. The engine oils have come leaps and bounds since the 70's and so has the machining tolerances in new engine assemblies so I don't believe in adding ANY oil additives.

Chevron Techron : It's at the top of most lists for cleaning fuel systems that's safe to use in any equipment. I've used it for years and am happy with the results.

Motorvac Services : Are you talking about engine cleaning or fuel system cleaning flushes? A properly maintained vehicle doesn't need them. Good oil (especially synthetic will clean a dirty engine and keep a clean engine clean). A bottle of Techron once every 5-6K miles keeps the fuel system up to snuff.

My 2 cents : oil is oil I mean of course their is going to be better choices but I mean royal purple, mobile 1, ams oil etc...anything in that price range is going to be good.

As for additives IMO they are kind of a waste of money, they may help but won't cure. No such thing as a miracle in a can, if it's a mechanical problem magical liquids ain't gonna fix it. I have heard of Lucas helping with valvetrain issues tho...

I tried the lucas oil additive today in our 5.3 tahoe w/ 139,574 on it..

We,ll see what happens..

All I know is I have used AMSOIL since 1975 and will never use anything else as there is no need. I have never changed my oil more than once every year since. I have saved a lot of money and never had one single engine/trans/axle issue in all these years. Just changed (Thursday)my Denali over to synthetic engine oil and on Tueday the dealer is switching all the other fluids over as well.

As was mentioned by chevybody86, oil additives are a big waste of money and the only ones who benefit from them are those selling the additives. No one has ever proven they are effective, all you have is people saying they are and that means nothing. I have never used Lucas and never will, just a snake oil company IMO.

Other than seafoam, I always though chevron was one of the fuel cleaners that actually did something...

I used rotella because of good things i heard, then switched to mobil 1, now im debating on amsoil...

@elcamino...what do you mean 'snake oil company'

Lucas "oil stabilizer" is nothing but a thickener and tackifier...it has absolutely no benefit in a mechanically sound engine. Run a quality oil, and feel good.

Schaeffer makes some very reputable lubricants as well...I ran their 5w40 full synthetic (series 9000) in my Cummins for almost 150k of its life (traded with 270k on the clock), and had some really good looking UOAs.

However, I had really good looking UOAs on nothing more than off-the-shelf conventional Rotella 15w40 in that truck too...in fact, one OCI exceeded 40k miles (had a bypass filter installed), and was still considered suitable for continued use by the lab. The CJ-4 conventional diesel oils are actually very good.
