Fuel Gauge Quit Working

Recommended Posts

Dropped the truck off at the dealer this morning.. My fuel gauge kept on bouncing from empty to full and everywhere in between for the last few weeks. Even after a fill up it would go right down to empty and the check engine light would come on along w the low fuel alarm. Kind of a PITA to take a 2 month old truck in for service already but at least its covered. Hopefully its an easy fix... not sure how long i can rock this little Aveo for haha

Also asked them to check the AFM programming. The damn thing keeps engaging / disengaging around 30-35 mph. I do like the mpg saving but it feels like the motor is misfiring when it goes back and forth. From what the service guy was telling me that is normal but it shouldnt be switching on and off so often. :dunno: I think a tune is in my near future if they cant get it straightened out...

Dealer just called... Need to replace my fuel level sensors (fancy wording for float? ha). Not in stock of course, should have her back tomorrow afternoon.

AFM problem... They have an update for the computer that specifically addresses the "rough" feeling when it switches back and forth. Good news... I would say if yours feels a bit rough, take it in.

Can you please get the details for the AFM program update? I would like to talk to my dealer about my rough AFM transition, but would like to go up there with some detailed info in possible.

Thanks

Best fix for AFM is to disable it, at least that is what I have gathered from everyone I have talked to with AFM trucks.

Well picked her up on tuesday.. Everything working fine, until i got about a mile away from the dealership! fuel gauge went down to empty and the low fuel warning showed up on the dic. AWESOME! They replaced the sensors in the tank so now they think it could be the gauge itself. I have to take it back in next week now. would have done it sooner but i am taking the beast camping over the weekend. Just a pain mot knowing how much gas is actually in the tank!

The AFM deal.. they updated the computer. The vibration is a lot less noticeable but still there. I dont think we can get around that unless it is tuned out by someone. Looks like blackbear is in my future... I dont have my service report on me now... i will post the update code along with the AFM bulletin when I get home later.

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing these issues with your truck. Please keep us posted of the results of your dealer visit.

Well after taking the truck in for the second time, they found the problem with the fuel gauge not working. The harness! My service rep told me they had to go under the truck and pretty much wiggle every wire until they replicated my complaint. The replaced the harness.. now it works as it should. Fuel mileage went up because it finally reads right. Finally up to 16.1 mpg

As for the Bulletin for the AFM... I will post the ## up today.

If you're driving around town set the trans to M4 or M5. I never put mine in D unless it's highway. AFM will never engage unless you have it in M6/D.

i've heard thats typical GM. my last 01 truck had that twice. i fixed it once under warranty, the next time i let it go. i hope my new one doesn't do that.
