2012 Sierra with Onstar how to add xm/Sirius???

I have a 2012 Sierra that I want to put sirius/xm radio in. It has OnStar so from what I've read it has the XM Attenna as well. The radio also has the cat/band buttons.

For earlier models (2007-2011) I've read that you can just add GM part 20940402 If you have the right RPO codes which I do.

Companies that sell the part are saying it won't work with a 2012.

"iSimple" makes a kit that adds into the back of the deck, to a sirius reciever but you still have to run an antenna from it. Some companies say it will work on a 2012 some say it wont.

Is there anyway to make this work with what I have so I don't have to run wires everywhere or use the AUX with a reg tuner?

Has anyone done this?

Thanks,

Unless this is just too early and I am reading this wrong you don't need anything. Simply change the band to XM and get your radio ID. Go to the XM website and fill in the info. If there is a black plastic thing over your drivers side ontop of the cab then you already have an XM receiver.

Some trucks don't come with XM from the factory. My 07 didn't.

I was watching the OGM install vid and you can put an antenna under the dash where the defrost vents are, pretty nice setup and clean.

Screw the factory set up I got the dock and play I got a home stereo and docks in my car truck and boat. It's clean you can't see wires unless you look behind the thing and I run it through fm tuner. Sounds good. 1 unit 4 locations I can use it. Win.

The stereo shop hung it off the heater vent and used a aux wire and it looked tacky as heck. I relocated it to the window and routed the wires under the dash through the window and dash.

As per my post I cannot change the band to XM, it is FM/AM only. When I press the CAT button it says for XM application only. Yes I do have an antenna on the top for my on-star. I thougt this was standard equipment on 2008s? Any ideas on how to get XM? I talked to the dealer and they need me to bring it in as they are at a loss as well, they don't think it came with it. I don't like the look of an external mount so I may buy a new drop in stereo if this doesn't work.

It is not standard.

I just completed this mod on my 2012 work truck. I bought a factory XM box and short wiring harness that was taken out of another pickup. I had to modify the XM box because the XM box is tied to the original truck's VIN and will not work in another truck because of the theft lock feature. The solution is to cut 4 leads to a small chip in the box ( I can send a link if you get serious). I used an aftermarket XM antenna that had a connector that would work on the GM XM box. In my 2007 SIlverado, the Onstar antenna did not have XM. I used the GM factory kit back then and had to change out the antenna. If your new Onstar antenna has the XM antenna there should be a wire and connector tied off somewhere behind the glove box.

A wiring harness is required to "Y" the XM box into the radio plug. Try to find a salvage yard box and harness combo. The XM bok can be mounted behind the glove box if you can get the bracket, or just use cable ties.

The only "bug" I have found is that when I turn off the truck, the XM radio usually goes back to Channel 1 when I restart. I suspact this is due to the mod to get around the theft lock. I can live with this because I have my favorite channels preset on the radio. The presets do not change.

I spent less than $100 for the whole set up and am very happy.

Can you post which leads to cut?

    • Whoever greenlighted the work truck matte black front bumpers on every trim but the AT4X should be fired!  I was hoping that was an AI mistake, but just realized they were on every model of the 2027 Silverado too.     Some parts of the interior do look premium, but the Denali Ultimate dashboard looks like an afterthought.  At least they appear to have lost the microfiber the high end Silverado models showed, but the '27 High Country dash looks better than the Denali.
    • New member here. I am researching a read-first event-recorder concept for late-model GM V8 trucks. This is not a sales post. There is no product link, price, preorder, or mailing list. I am trying to determine whether the underlying problem is real before building anything.   Has your truck ever had a brief problem such as: - rough running or a momentary misfire - an oil-pressure warning or unusual pressure event - reduced power or a brief stall - a U-code or lost-communication problem - a symptom that disappeared before the dealer or independent shop could reproduce it   If so, I would appreciate the following details: - year, model, engine, and mileage - what happened and under what conditions - whether a DTC and useful freeze-frame data were stored - whether the shop was able to reproduce it - what the eventual confirmed repair was, if known - what additional information would have helped the diagnosis   The concept being evaluated is a removable leave-in recorder that continuously retains a rolling window from before and after an event. It would not tune, reflash, clear codes, or change the vehicle calibration.   I am also not claiming that it could predict lifter failure or see every internal ECM variable.   The real question is whether continuous event history would add enough useful evidence beyond freeze frame, GDS2, and existing scan tools — or whether it would simply be another unnecessary gadget.   For owners and technicians, which problem would make something like this genuinely useful: 1. intermittent misfire or AFM/DFM-related behavior 2. oil-pressure events 3. lost communication or electrical faults 4. none of the above Please be blunt. Negative feedback is just as useful as positive feedback.
    • No tears over the SLE and SLT trim levels disappearing but I kind of loathe the "Elevation" name. It's a truck--skip the elegance.   The slab-dashboard design is decidedly different. Almost has a Hummer flavor to it. "Professional Grade" seems to be leaning very white-collar, tech-driven these days moreso than blue-collar, functional design.   The Silverado would be my choice between the two new trucks. Pleased with the engine lineup in both. The GMC is a little "too much" for a truck, IMO, and the Denali borders on ridiculous - but I do know there are buyers for luxury trucks out there. It's just not my speed.
