For those that degree their cams

Just trying to see out of the people that install cams how many people degree them and where they degree them to. The TR220-12 is ground with 4 degrees advance. I read that some people think this is too much for this size of cam and install it back 2 degrees to make a total of +2. Just trying to see what other people think and what they are doing.

Thanks

Its been years since I built a motor and degreed in the cam. And since I am not sure what cam you have and what you are wanting to do with it. It is hard to say if you should run it at 2 or 4. At one time Competion Cams had an adjustable gear set and timing cover that you could change the setting without pulling it back apart. We had one on a Big Block Camero drag car. It could go if I remember from +6 to -6 with a allen wrench adjustment. I know that this does not help with your question, just my .02. :jester:

I have the tr220-12 in a 5.3. The reason I want to degree it is that after everything was together and dyno tuned, I was missing about 100 hp and torque. I pulled it back apart to double check my work and have the cam, cam doctored. One issue was I needed longer push rods to take up the valve lash. That helped the valve noise but I am still missing power up top, even with all supporting mods. The tuner said that it looks like a timing issue. I figure my best bet is to get a new adjustable timing set and make sure I am degreed where I need to be. This cam is ground with a 4 degree advance. I know the more advance, the more low end torque and the more retarded, the more top end power. Just trying to see what others are doing and their results.
