Transmission Pan

I have a 1995 GMC K2500 4x4 with the 5.7 engine and 3.42 rears. In the near future I plan to start pulling a trailer to carry my motorcycle with me, maybe a 7' x 14' trailer, I have also thought about maybe a lightweight 25' or under toyhauler travel trailer. My truck has been lightly used and only has 48,000 miles on it but now I'm retired I will be using it much more. I want to change my transmission fluid in the near future, the truck has the 4L60E transmission. I have also been thinking about installing a deep pan on the transmission to hold more fluid, mine has the regular pan. I have been looking at TCI and Maghytec aluminum deep pans which add another 3.3 qts. of fluid. At anywhere from $260 to $300 for one of these pans are they worth the cost? Do they really help keep the transmission cooler? I like the fact that they have a drain plug and also a plug to install a transmission temp sender, my original pan doesn't have either one of these. Any ideas would be appreciated! By the way my truck does have the trailer tow package with an engine oil and transmission cooler from the factory.

Thanks for any replies!!

I'd put a larger cooler on it and switch to full synthetic fluids. The factory cooler is a bit small IMO

The larger pan with more fluid most certainly allows the trans to run cooler. Got them on every work truck I own. Some of the best money I have ever spent.

Larger oil cooler is easy and cheap.

I've thought about changing the pan. Will be interested to hear your experience if you go that route.

Anyone know if there's a factory pan for the 4L60/4L70 with a drain plug? Sorry about the hijack.

You mean a GM pan?I haven't come across one. Dorman makes a good pan with drain plug

The Dorman pan came in this week. I'm ready to change the pan/fluid/filter, but it's hot as hell out there now. Maybe this evening.

Are the screws in the selector cable bracket Torx head?

Yes they are torx. Should be a T40. I will add this, on the Dorman pans that we have installed the drain plugs sometimes would seep a tiny bit, even though tight. The installed crush washers weren't working properly. We solved it by using a replacement washer that has the rubber center. I beleive it is Dorman's M12 washer

Yes, #40 IIRC. I bought it as a single at HD. Fairly large one.

Oddly, my pan wouldn't come off without removing that bracket, but had no trouble getting my buddy's 02 HD's pan off without removing that bracket.

Thanks again Txab. Especially on the tip about the drainplug washer leak.

I bought a plastic mortor mixing from HomeD to catch the mess.

While we're on this, what do you think of removing a cooler line and idling the engine while the trans pumps all the fluid out? Any risks? Any benefits? I read some blogs that you get nearly all the fluid out.

You can also replace those torx with M8x1.25, regular hex head bolts. Many do

I replaced mine, just to make it easier next time I drop the pan.

I would also go with a larger oil cooler. Easy to do and will really help the life of the transmission.

I have a tow pkg Vmax and don't recall seeing any temp problems with the stock setup. I don't tow much. Maybe once every couple yrs.

OK, the deed is done. I'm having a cold one to celebrate. I changed the pan and filter. I didn't change that filter seal. I looked at it and it had an significant amount of cursewords and special tool written all over it. I checked it and it looked good. It was tight on the new filter and I am glad not to have touched it. I did put in hexhead bolts on the bracket. It wasn't that hard to remove, but the torx heads didn't help.

That makes 4 out of 6 fluids I need to change before the hunt seasons begin and I start driving all over the country. The engine, front diff, xfer case, and now trans are done. Rear diff and coolant should be next.
