'11 Sierra & haven't been using Dexos

I have a 2011 Sierra 5.3L with 14k on it and was just informed today that it requires Dexos oil. I have been using Castrol standard 5W30 in it and changing it evey 3-4k miles. Now that I know this I will be using Dexos in the future. Do you think I did any damage to my motor by using standard oil?

Thanks!

Amsoil & a few others meet the Dexos requirement. Don't have to run GM's oil.

No, you didn't

Dexos is for the extended drain intervals

I would agree with that. I think the oil life monitor is programmed accordingly.

The 2010s don't require Dexos speced and the 5.3 (and possibly others) are the same motors as in the 2011s. What did you say? You DIDN'T use regular oil :)

There are quite a few companies that meet the dexos spec, but are refusing to pay GM the royalty to use the GM sticker on the bottle. Personally, I will not purchase any oil that has that label. Oil companies need to just stand up to GM and their royalty payments. There is no way GM should be allowed to extort money from companies just to get the sticker.

If the oil met the listed standards in the manual for your truck, you have no worries. The manual does not say you MUST use dexos only. Read your manual, and pay attention to the wording, and also the other standards the oil has to meet. Also watch the oil bottles, I believe some say they meet or exceed dexos, but do not have the sticker (they refused to pay the ransom).
