Volucris your thinking backwards diesels actually have lower payload ratings because of the weight of the engine. I agree with kstruck the measurements are different than here.

Could be. That VW Amorak gets an average of 38 mpg. I'd love to have one of these.

They're built for work, so the numbers are higher than our half tons. Also the numbers for fuel efficiency are higher because their gallon is bigger.

I, for one, am happy with the emission laws here. I recall the LA basin the first time I saw it as a teen in 1968. My eyes were burning and watering as we drove thru San Bernadino and Los Angeles. My I could taste the air and my throat was sore in minutes. I've been a hot rodder off and on and have had cars that I had to get bootleg smog certificates on, etc. Still, I'm overall very pleased with the progress made on cleaning up the air. Someone's desire for a faster car or easier way to modify their car or truck just doesn't stand up to a rational pro and con discussion.

Frankly that Holden Colorado sounds like it'd be a pig with 148 or 177 hp and 3300 lbs in it, diesel or no diesel.

With the mountain range so close to the coast and smog being so heavy it has no were to go. here in Florida it just blows over. My problem with CA is they will fail a car for haveing aftermarket parts with out the CARB sticker regardless if it passes the sniffer or not.

US ratings are different...

Not Really True

I think MikeNH has it right. Did some reading and in other markets, they are actually built with suspensions to make them a "truck". As Mike said, they are made for work. I was reading that the ride on some of these trucks unloaded is very harsh due to the suspension. I guess the trucks here are made to be driven with an empty bed. Unless you step up to an HD.

You also have to consider the weight of trucks here, mine is 5380. That comes out of the payload. Most of the ones tested were lighter. I attribute a lot to what is considered "safe" here is much different than there. Also, yes they are designed for more rugged uses (like I use mine) dirt roads, etc.
