Start Up Noise 2013 Sierra's 5.3 liter

The noise you described is commonly called "piston slap".

I haven't heard much about piston slap on a 5.3 since ~ 2005. Not saying it doesn't exist any more, but GM did something to get better fit (I assume). The noise the OP describes is definitely consistent with the hydraulic lifter tick I've heard on mine a few times after it has sit for a long time (days, not hours). It quietens in less than 30 seconds. I'd say the noise is "normal" for a truck that's been sitting. If one doesn't do it, it may simply be that it was started more recently.

Well they took it in and called today saying the lifters need to be replaced. Very glad the dealership gave me no hassle about it and I am sure they will correct the problem.

However, I received a 2012 silverado as a rental truck with the 5.3l and it has a hint of the same noise with only 5000miles! Albeit it is no where near the loudness of my truck but still you would think that gm would have the quietest lifters on the planet by now after dealing with this issue for so many years!

I've had my truck in twice for ticking noise on cold start up. Replaced lifters both times. Still does it a bit but not as loud as before. It seems like it is just something these trucks do. Also, as someone mentioned make sure it has proper oil level, as some leak/consume oil, which GM says is normal for something like 1.5L/5,000 km. Low oil will make the ticking worse.

Got the truck back a couple days ago and so far so good. Noticed oil pressure is way up too for some reason. Replaced all 16 lifters with updated lifters an did an oil change. We will see how it goes.

I am still having trouble with GM saying it is normal to have oil consumption/loss. I had an 01 that had the lifter noise, however, it never used a drop of oil. Could a GM rep chime in on this?? Where is the oil going???

If you ask Gm and you are not satisfyed then tell them you want to open a file and file a complaint. I have done this and then you have there attention. They dont like doing this but dont give up.

There is an allowable amount.

No, the allowable amount is not GM's choice but an answer they use. Sorry, but it's the owners choice not the GM rep or the dealer. If your not satisfied don't take any less than what you want. My truck may have been sitting for 5 weeks but I was not accepting that noisy POS engine. They just kept throwing parts at it hoping it would satisfy me and them.

$3,000.00 in parts and labor then later they decide a new engine would be best. $5,000.00 more so they are down $8,000.00 not including labor for the new engine.

All oil consumption on the newer truck is due to the AFM and GM knows this. If my new motor uses oil or makes the same noise it will be sitting in their shop until I'm satisfied or they buy it back and give me a new one.

My 4.8 uses 1 quart every 10k kms

1 quart every 5k kms or 3miles is acceptable.

I do not have AFM 4.8 don't get AFM

AFM obviously has minor issues we only hear more bad stories than good because people like you get mad enough to post about it. Most of the good stories reside in people who aren't even registered here.

Stop saying stuff like this GM makes the rules not you, don't buy if you don't like.

You had bad luck, it happens.

There is a reason they say "check your oil"....

That's your choice if you want to accept the fact that your truck uses a quart of oil in what I consider a less than acceptable time. Even though my engine went bad it never used any oil between the 6500 mile oil changes.

If you choose to buy their excuse that is your decision and your choice to accept that answer. Not everyone who buys a new truck will accept that as an answer.

I did not say GM makes the rules. I said if you are not happy with their diagnosis you as a consumer do not have to accept it.

As far as checking my oil? I do that once a week and before any long trip. BUT if I buy a new truck and I've only driven it 3000 miles and need to put oil in it? Yeah, I have an issue.

That was not my issue as mine was knocking from bad internal parts not OIL consumption.

My 2011 5.3 uses not one drop between 10,000 k oil change.Girlfreinds 6.2 is the same not one drop.THAT is called satisfied. Some people are to easy going if they are not satisfied with there vehicle.Wake up.You paid a lot of money for that truck.Be happy with it at the end of the day.

+1

I won't settle for less myself. 30-40 grand isn't pocket change and I will not accept a poor excuse like, That's Normal....or Acceptable..... I say BS

I was referring to this. Im sure there are 4.3, 4.8, and 6.2 that burn some oil, its impossible they all are flawless.

ALL engine manufactures out there put out some engines that inevitably burn a little oil. Some engines NEVER burn oil.

The reality is that some engines burn oil.

Using alot MORE than one quart a change? Leaking? Engine noise? Yeah then thats a problem. Anything else "pound sand" will be your answer.

Good luck getting replacement trucks after driving for a year because you burn a little oil (1 quart or less)

Or a new engine.

GM won't do it.

Nor would any Vehicle Company with the common sense of trying to turn a profit.

I welcome anyone who can provide proof they got a NEW TRUCK OR ENGINE after driving the one they had FOR AWHILE because it had a minor consumption issue (1 quart or less).

You guys are insane.

Anyways back to the engine noise topic.

please see earlier thread...2001 5300 that had 155 km's on it and it did not use a drop of oil. i too would be upset, if my truck used an ounce of oil. it doesn't matter if u spent 25 or 50 grand, they shouldn't be using any oil, especially when they are that new!!!
