I guess I could count this as auto industry news since it shows how low GM is when outsourcing our building quality of trucks.

The link above shows the 2012 percentage of truck is American content to include Canada.

What saddens and makes me think is the comment section near the bottom, most agree and bash that GM is junk and that CHEVY needs to break off and become its own company. I couldn't agree more and the current chevy I have now will probably be my last if something doesn't change. Sooner or later, GM could possibly become a Chinese company. What are your thoughts on all this?

I'm less concerned about the "where", than I am about the "how". I care that a vehicle lasts, with minimal problems. I love that the Tundra is assembled in TX, and the motor/transmissions are built in AL, yet it gets ragged by "truck folks". There's something fishy about the list too, since it shows Ford as having the same "domestic content" as Toyota, but higher "other country" content, yet it's ranked on top w/ the Ridgeline. Looks like Tundra is really #1 on that list, but Toyota isn't doing it out of "national interest". It's cheaper for them to build here than elsewhere, since they don't have to deal w/ import tarriffs.

If I get really worried about this, I can't buy another computer, TV, phone, or anything else. Heck, I can't even buy gas for my truck...

Saying Chevy needs to split from GM proves how damn uneducated people are in how the industry works. There is no longer any such thing as a Chevy motor or a Caddy motor, it's all GM developed and shared across the lineup. It would never, ever work. And even if the GM has less American part content than the Ford, I know Ford has sourced major parts in other models to china (like the made of glass manual transmission in the new Mustang) whereas GM's major foreign source is Mexico.

And GM, nor any other of the big three will ever be a china company- the govt likely won't allow key industries to be held by an enemy of America.

i learned in my meeting at work that japanese vehicles are being made more so in america now because japan and china are arguing over some land and refuse to work with eachother, so their lamo cars are being built over here now since they are mad at eachother

Something else to remember is that those numbers only reflect where the parts are made, not who designed them, where they were designed, who managed production, who shipped them, assembly, etc. A part made in a GM owned & managed plant in Mexico or Canada is "made in Mexico/Canada", even though a lot of Americans are involved in the process.

That has nothing to do with it. The land they are fighting about is unoccupied- just a couple small islands. Import brands have had factories here since the 80s- the trucks were built here to avoid huge import taxes and cars here because for one the North American market models are often different than what is sold in Asia or Europe and to eliminate currency fluctuations as a factor- if a car is built in Japan they run the risk of losing money if their currency gains against the USD. And Japan and China have never really worked together. Your managers need to read a history book or something.

no they would rather have them built/have parts supplied here rather than china and have the cars shipped there. he went into more detail than i remember because i was barely paying attention but idk

I did notice how.odd it was when the top three had 75% Americas and 15 other, there is 90% bit what makes the other 10%? Either way, outsourcing blows and GM needs to pay its debt back and move on to greater improvmemts like who.designs the cars and trucks, someone needs to.be.fired.

china is not a enemy of america ... if it was the usa would be wipe off the map instead they will be nice to the world and win in the market place.

Its where the final process is done i think. Like a comp all the parts are made in Asia and we just simply assemble the comp and consider it a north american product even tho it was made in Asia .
