1998 gmc toruble shooting

I have a 1998 GMC Sierra. When i push the gas pedal the whole truck shakes and then it smells like something is burning. Could you help me out?

I'm going to move this to the proper section but it sounds like your truck is misfiring. Do you have a check engine light on/flashing?

Yes the light did come on

I'd start by getting codes read. I'm willing to bet you'll see P0300, P030x with x being anything from 1 to 8. Autozone and similar stores should do it for free. Though the burning smell could be clogged cats too.

Why would this just randomly start though?

If its plugs you could check to see if wires got damaged. I forget if those trucks still have a distributor or if they use a cool but that could be bad too. How many miles?

Yes it still has a distributor and it has 227000 miles

Well if you have not done cap/rotor/plugs/wires recently that could easily be it. Get the codes read, it is free and it is tough to know what is happening unless you get that done first.

The two things that come to mind other than tune up would be to verify your timing (maybe running too far retarded) and also check your harmonic balancer to make sure it hasn't come loose on you. Although if the second one is true you'd probably have a world of other problems as well.
