Not my best showing...backed into the garage

Definitely not one of my finer moments. Being a bit frazzled this morning when backing out of the garage (2 kids screaming), I didn't realize that the garage door wasn't all the way up yet. Backed right into it.  

 

Luckily, the door was almost all the way up, so I only damaged the plastic end caps on my ski rack. This is a 2002 Tahoe Z71 model, so the caps are a bit larger than the normal Tahoes.

 

I called my dealer and he said they only sell the endcap in a kit that contains many other parts, including all the hardware that installs the back mount to the roof (of course right). Not all bad though, since one of the mounting studs for the endcap broke off as well. Anyway, the dealer quoted me $98 each.   At least he gave me the part numbers.

 

I checked on gmpartsdirect.com and to my pleasure, found that I can get them for $70 each (including shipping). I'm just nervous since I can't see a picture to be sure it's the right part number. I could just get the stuff from the dealer, verify the parts, return them, and then buy online, but I'd prefer to not go through the hassle. I have enough of them right now.

 

Anyone know of a way that I can verify the part numbers online? They are 88937285 (driver's side cap), and 88937286 (passenger's side cap).

Hit Grandma's 91 Civic several years back as I pushed the opener remote to open it while she hit hers to open it while backing out...needless to say 1 of us opened it and the other closed it...left a dime size dent in the top of the roof right at the rear window molding.

Thanks Ryan. I need to loosen the whole assembly so I can adjust the pad against the roof. Looks like I pushed it forward a bit. Man I was lucky (as lucky as stupid can be I guess). If the door was a bit lower, the tailgate would have got nailed!

I have a related story. We had an old wood garage door and my lil brother (at the time was like 6) told my dad the door was open.  Somehow  ??? he put it in reverse and BOOM hit the door it wasnt up at all   No damage to his truck but he did crack the door pretty good

 

Any damage to your garage door?  I work at a home improvement store and we sell garage doors (my dept) and we get alot of people buying panels because their plow hit it, they truck hit it, etc.  Your not alone

More damage to the garage than to the truck, thanks for asking. Good thing I used to install doors and the openers. I had to basically pull the bottom panel, "reshape" some of the brackets that were bent from the iimpact, fix a spot where the door's layers broke apart (wood screws helped here), and then put it all back together. Better than new.  

 

As for the truck, just got up there. I don't think I pushed the whole rack like I thought I did, I really didn't hit it that hard. I just think Chevy never really lined up the left and right pads at the factory. So when I install the new kit, I'll line em up. By the way, if anyone's interested, the whole rear assembly in the rack is only held in place by 3 torx screws on each side. Easy to work on...

 

As for the parts, I just noticed that the endcap has a part number stamped in it. Looks like either 818622 or just 18622 or could be 9456-1014-2NB?

Well, I just tried all those part numbers and turned up nothing, guess I need the whole kit.

Bummer about the accident!!!  I too had a run-in with the garage door once.  I don't know if the door didn't open all the way or if I was impatient, but since I was backing in, I don't think it opened all the way.  It stopped about 6" short... I scraped some paint and left white marks on my fiberglass cap, and ripped a couple of the door hinges apart and trashed a few rollers too...

Now that I think about it, I wonder if I should be careful about having the truck out in the rain/snow until the cap is replaced. I'm sure the screws holding the unit to the roof aren't sealed. I wouldn't want water to leak into the inside and ruin the headliner. I guess I'll stick with the parts from the local dealer so I can get it fixed asap.

Well, got the truck all back together now. Looks just like new. A little polishing compound took the scrathes out of the rear window frame. Whew!  

 

But of course, one thing must always go wrong. When reassembling, there are two little T-10 Torx screws that hold the endcaps on. The grooves in the head stripped out on the right hand side.

 

Anyone know if I can order just these? Should I just go to a hardware store and find something the same length/thread?

 

I don't know why any manufacturer would use a screw with a T-10 head. Way too small, they just don't hold up. ???
