Anyone been through a concealed carry class? Looking for one in southern IN and can't find anything. I would like to take a class to try and learn a few things, but closest I can find is Indy. Just wondered what others have done. Thoughts on people that have taken classes?

Never taken one personally. I went through hunters ed for my hunting license, and that is valid towards my carry permit. I just signed my wife up for a ladies NRA basic pistol class for a couple weeks from now, so I'm hoping that goes well for her. You can search on the NRA site for the classes that they have lesson plans for...I've heard that as a basic class they are usually pretty decent. If you have experience but no formal training, then you would probably still pick up a thing or two, but would be better served finding a defensive pistol class.

I would say to talk to some of your local law enforcement people, they know who is going to teach the best, if they are not one to teach they will know who does. I hate to say this but check on facebook, alot of them around here use it to get the message out about when and where classes are held. The guy who taught mine came to my sons house for two of us, it only cost $30.00 for that part. :jester:

+1 for local gun shops. There are a lot of private people who teach them since it only takes a really basic class to be a certified NRA pistol instructor. Usually the gun shop guys are the way to go. Usually cost more, but worth it. I spent 150 on my class and I have a buddy who teaches them for $50.

Take a course to get your CCW but also get a copy of the regulations for your state/area and read it yourself. Don't go by the talk you hear from others, especially around gun stores. Some of the stuff I hear stated as fact will get you thrown in jail! Some of the stuff that has been taught in CCW classes is ridiculous also and a good way to get killed.

What went wrong in your class? If they are teaching things to get you killed, the person teaching has no business doing the class. Is it a "certified instructor" or a volunteer mall ninja?

Nothing went wrong in my class 15 years ago it was great and the instructors were top notch. Some others that I know have taken classes in the past few years have had some terrible experiences and some of the stuff they were told as fact - total BS. As you say "mall ninja" type training. There are also excellent courses being taught. Buyer beware.

It can be all over the map. In Michigan, the course is supposed to follow the curriculum of the NRA Personal Protection Inside the Home course, along with a presentation by a lawyer on the laws surrounding carrying and self defense. Our instructor and the lawyer were both very detailed and they still made the class fun. I've heard of some places cutting lots of corners which on the surface sounds nice (I spent 9+ hours there that day) but in the end I'm glad I got the real deal. Michigan makes you work for it but in the end the CPL is worth it- it is the most widely accepted carry permit in the country, tied with Arkansas at 40 states total that honor it.

A good law/travel resource is www.handgunlaw.us. I use it to check laws before traveling.

I took the NRA handgun safety course years ago for Virginia; not sure if it has changed any, but at the time that and ffifty rounds of practice on the range were all that was needed. Kentucky had a more engaging course that was not waiverable (many states accept military or other qualifications in lieu of a CCW course), but they issue a Concealed Deadly Weapon License that enables a person to carry nearly anything. I concur with other posts here, though; check your local laws and shop around for a good course with valid information. Also, if you are going to carry, plan to adjust your clothing styles and temperament in public. I suppose that many people get a CCW and just throw a pistol on their belts, but I started buying my pants and shorts a size or two bigger (to accomodate an inside-the-waistband holster), wearing undershirts (to keep the gun from being directtly against my skin), and even took to wearing Hawaiian shirts for a couple of summers as a means to conceal my .45 on hot days without compromising comfort.

Others mention mall ninjas and the like. Beware of those who seem to have impeccible qualifications that they boast about in print or in person. If it takes aa paragraph or more for an instructor to list his qualifications he may be full of poo. Most instructors I've met/dealt with are NRA certified and perhaps current or former law enforcement or military, but none have been super high-speed harbingers of destruction who just-so-happened to content themselves with teaching concealed carry courses.
