Windows 8

Pretty much agree with your statements but with macs being built with Intel processors/products I'd never have a need to over pay for a mac when I can just build a PC and use it as a "hackntosh" if I want to. Also another point to add is it costs more to fix a mac than a PC.

as far as the backup stuff I can do all of that as well with my Android and so much more that isn't as easy or maybe even possible on ios. I put a different operating system on my phone all the time and all my programs are backed up. If i wanted I could back up my settings and wifi passwords as well but I prefer to start fresh. All comes down to personal preference. If I didn't want to tinker with my phone and left it as is I'd probably own an iphone.

When it comes to windows 8 I've heard good things from my more computer savvy friends. Especially those that reverted the UI back to windows look/feel. No one I can think of offhand likes the new 8 UI and those that don't change it have either taken it back, or in the case of one of my patience lacking friend, smashed it to pieces.

Do you run Jelly Bean on your Android?

I definitely prefer the W7 style setup on my laptop. It has a touchscreen but I deactivated it because I never used it. Trackpad is easier for me. So the whole touchscreen layout of W8 is lost on me.

They should have added another version for just regular computers and laptops that has the old style setup. Could have been called Windows 8 Classic...

Yes I run 4.2.2 JB on my phone even though HTC never officially put out anything past gingerbread and 4.1.x JB on my HP Touchpad that didn't even come with Android in the first place. Open source is an amazing thing. I really need to use Linux one of these days. One day soon I'll play around with windows 8 as well. Even after just about 2 years with my first touch screen device I still suck with touch screens. The one thing I miss is a physical keyboard.

I definitely like that idea. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they do, given all complaints about the new style. IMO, if it's not broken don't fix it, just make it better.

I need to try out a device running JellyBean. I'm used to apple touch screens though. I've had an ipod touch for about 4 years now. I'm not a big fan of their layout though.

I'm still running ICS. I don't have a problem with it. As far as windows 8, it isn't bad and I really don't have a complaint except finding control panel can be a bitch, but I solved that by putting the control panel buttons as tiles

I was in the market for a new laptop, went to Best Buy, no more Windows 7. They now have a rep from Microsoft there 7 days a week to basically "sell" Windows 8, he walked me through it....think I'll wait until something better comes out. I like the "Windows 8 Classic" suggestion.

I don't mind having the tile screen since I also have the Start8 Program on my laptop. I can just switch back and forth between the two styles easily. It's almost like having two operating systems. It boots really fast too, but I'm not sure if it's because Windows 8 is faster or not. I already ordered a 4gig ram chip to max my ram out at 8gigs so im interested to see how much that helps.

Is the speed worth upgrading in your opinion? I like windows 7 a lot, but the boot speed isn't that good. Speed once fired up is great. I already have 8GB ram.

If all you're "concerned" with is boot speed then a SSD will make more of an impact than anything else. Not saying that you are. SSD will also help out with opening programs that are installed on it.

There's no reason to "boot" a Win7 desktop during normal use. A laptop... yes, since it may be on battery, but a desktop should be set to "sleep". A few seconds to "on" from sleep. I don't shutdown laptops unless I'm putting them away for a while (on battery).

Aren't SSD's pretty expensive? I think I remember them being more than my 1tb drive.

Stinsan, that's pretty impressive life for a machine with Vista. I think Vista rot happened to many, on my old desktop it was replaced with 7.

And I rarely shut down my XPS, but when it comes out of hibernation there's a minute or two it can't do much. If it's just asleep it's pretty much instantly ready.

I've considered upgrading my desktop to 8, but after using it on the laptop I'm not going to.

Disable hibernation, imho. It doesn't save much power, and takes as long to boot as a fresh start. Set the power mode to "sleep", spin down the drives, and turn off video. Very little power is used when sleeping on modern PC's, since support is built into the power-supplies and motherboard.

compared to mechanical drives, yes. Then again mechanical drives are still expensive as well. Prices per GB are fairly reasonable relatively speaking for SSDs. Around $0.50 or less is a decent price to pay. People coming from a mechanical drive to a SSD probably wouldn't notice the speed difference between a top tier and 2nd tier SSD so that's another way to keep the costs down. I like the samsung ones. You can find the 840s on sale often, the 840 pros cost about 75% more so getting the normal 840 will save you money.
