Good PC Info Website?

Recommended Posts

I just ordered a new Laptop yesterday, and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good websites for Information on Viruses, Computer Information, or anything like that. Basically I'm just looking for a site that has good information all around for someone who would want to know more about their computer, and how to protect it, or make it last longer.

I don't know if it will have specific info for your computer, but for general reviews, advice, and free downloads I go to Cnet.com. The pre-installed anti-virus (usually McAfee or Norton) should have pretty decent web support. I used to McAfee but have kept Norton on this computer so far. If/when there is anything that the AV software flags, I am given the option to learning more about the threat, potential causes, and so on.

Also, I know this has little to do with your computer, but I recently found http://www.mywot.com/ while checking to see if a download site was safe. It seems to be a decent webite reputation site that could help safeguard against risky domains.

Uninstall Norton and burn the CD. It bloats and consumes your PC.

I build desktops for gaming, and as a hobby.. Don't waste money on anti virus. The best anti virus is common sense. I run Malwarebytes every couple weeks. That's good enough. If you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them.

Most of what I learned was actually from a forum belonging to a very good PC part retailer here in Canada(They have a US site as well) NCIX.com

Initially I used the free version of MB, but decided to pay for it since it's such a great program

Tom's Hardware is a great site to read up on things, so is Hardware Canucks

I use Microsoft security essentials. Cnet.com usually has a lot of reviews on software to look at

Yeah that is actually one of the better ones. Windows Defender is good too, and included with windows. I was using it for a while, but ended up going back to Malwarebytes.

Norton is the absolute worst though. Its huge, and takes over your PC, slowing it down.

I have Malwarebytes and Windows Defender on my Desktop as I type this. My buddy put Malwarebytes on it for me this past weekend along with CCleaner.

Another Microsoft Security Essentials and Malawarebytes user here.

Also like CCleaner a lot really handy cleanup tool.

Tom's Hardware is a good site though it is mainly focused on hardware so maybe not the best for maintaining a pc.

howtogeek.com isn't bad for tutrials and basic know how. I don't frequent it much as I they cover mainly the basic stuff.

don't use cnet unless I have to really like filehippo.com for free program downloads. They keep a lot of versions available and just really run a cleaner site. You don't get the reviews though but I don't mind.

Basic advice I'd give you is at bare minimum:

Run windows update regularly.

Keep an updated anti virus running. (not norton it's bloated, not bad but you can do better.)

Backup anything that is important to you to a seperate external drive semi regularly (this can be automated)

Get an organization system if you have a lot of files/pictures.

Run CCleaner at least once a month. (frequency depends on use)

I'll have to check those sites out. I bought Bitdefender Plus for my Laptop and Desktop. The Laptop came with a trial of Norton which I do like, but I hear a lot about it being a resource hog so I got rid of it.

"Uninstall Norton and burn the CD." Love that, funniest thing I've read in days. I agree fully. Add MacAfee to that burn pile as well. I've made a wad of cash cleaning virii and malware off of Norton, MacAfee, and AVG (Free version) "protected" PC's. Their slow-as-hell definition updates pretty much sum up their protection in my book.

MS Security Essentials is pretty decent. F-Secure is pretty good, IMO. Malwarebytes stuff and/or good old Spybot S&D. Although I see some major revisions to their GUI so I am wondering how the underlying product is. Version 1.62 is still available and catches a lot of nasty stuff.

I've installed Bitdefender on two laptops for people and so far am impressed. Time will tell how they stand up.
