iPhone 5? Upgrade or no

For all intents and purposes 4G and LTE are one in the same. LTE is just a type of 4G network so far as I know. As for Apple vs Android, we could debate that for pages and pages. I'm fine with iTunes as I pay for the music I own and it's not like their prices are out of line with anyone else. The cord thing has yet to be an issue for me, I have one that is either at home or with me on the road and one for the truck. I've yet to come across an instance when I needed a new battery but they are indeed replaceable on a 4/4S. Not so sure about the 5. Takes a bit of extra work but not anything horrible. Most of the battery vendors will even send ya the goofy screwdriver you need to do the swap. Plus the Magpul case is wicked cool and you can't get that for nothing but the iPhone. :D

Agreed 3g/4g/LTE is basically a scam. LTE is running at about what 4g should be running at, the providers just want to roll out new fancy words to charge us more and claim they are giving us better service when they should be giving it to us in the first place. As far as apple vs android it boils down to personal preference. I could never subject myself to the locked down apple, others are fine with it. To each their own and as long as we have something resembling a free market which one is better is moot.

As to the OP's original question. If you like the phone you have why not just replace the battery if the battery life is the only con? After 2 years most batteries have already given up the ghost. Even though it is an apple the battery can still be replaced. Phone is out of warranty so you really have nothing to lose by replacing the battery. I don't know about where you are but here there are a few shops that do it. I believe batteries plus is one of the chains down here that will. Or you could always just do it yourself youtube pretty much has every tutorial you could ever want.

I'm still using a flip phone, but there may finally be a smartphone coming to market that catches my interest: http://www.htc.com/www/smartphones/htc-one/ . The iPhone 5 is the best built device today, imho, but I don't care for iOS, or Apple stuff in general. I'd rather have a smaller form factor, and Verizon has yet to say whether they'll carry it, but we shall see...

I think it's ridiculous that I paid less for a 51" plasma TV than what most of these phones cost, much less the data plans. A family of five can easily cost $300 per month for a basic data/phone/text plan, plus another $9/month per phone to buy the things. That's assuming nobody drops one on concrete over the two year "subsidized purchase" period. That would be $300 for the "plan", plus 5x $9 = $45 for the phones. Add in taxes/fees, and your north of $400 per month($5k per year!), just to talk and type on a tiny little screen.

I see really no difference between my friend's 3s and my 4s, and other than the screen being bigger on it, the 5. They are different looks wise, but performance on all of them is about the same to me. I use almost 2 GB/month, so I think I'm a decent judge of the other phones vs mine.

That's why I am on my parents plan. 2 gigs of data, and a fancy smartphone for $60 a month compared to the $100 it would cost me just for my phone with just the Wife and I.

The rates are expensive and AT&T and Verizon took away the unlimited data. I still have it with Verizon but if I upgrade I lose it. I bought my current phone outright because if it

Swappa has used phones for those of you who don't want to give up your current plan just to upgrade. Endorsed by XDA forums too so hopefully it isn't all that bad. Almost debating on getting an SIII or Note II off there instead of the S4, but I'll probably end up with the S4 as the only other new phone that interests me is the HTC One and with no SD or removable battery it's a no go for me.

No SD Card slot is def a no go on any phone for me. A built in battery isn't something I care to have either, but I could take it or leave it.

Yeah I still refuse to latch on to this "cloud" stuff. I want my files and I want them now. I don't want to upload them only to have to download them again when I want them. Battery wouldn't be a huge issue if I didn't plan on keeping the phone for a while. I'm on 2 years with my current phone and miraculously the battery seemed fine. I replaced it about a month ago just because it was cheap and I was curious. I really don't notice difference though. Some people with my phone have replaced their battery 2-4 times already. Guess I got lucky.

*edit* also doing a battery pull when I get a bad flash or boot loop is easier/faster than holding a combination of buttons for a forced phone reset. If I didn't like to tinker then yeah battery would be lower on priority.

Stopped by Verizon today, to check out the latest phones (to see if any catch my interest yet). After listening to me for a minute, the sales guy went in the back and brought out a brand new Blackberry Z10. I thought "whatever... don't want to look at a BB device". I played with it for a minute, and man... what a phone. The build quality is right there w/ an iPhone, maybe better. Nice size/shape, and very slick interface. I'm sure that the app selection is slim, but for someone like me that just needs to integrate mail, calendars, etc., with the ability to look up something... it's a nice option. It uses a micro-usb connector, has a micro-sd slot, and hdmi support. I don't know a thing about the OS, but it felt/worked well to me.

From what I've been reading the new RIM devices and OS is supposed to be great. I miss my BlackBerry at times

The Z10 build quality felt very good, but as of now, the price was the same as an iPhone 5. They really need to push it out at a big discount to get folks to consider it, since app support is going to be relatively "poor".

get the 5, it's a great phone. LTE is brutal on data. My data usage went up more than double over 3g. If you have a good signal, the battery will easily last more than a day.

I knew the minute I saw the title of this that it would turn into a pages upon pages debate even though Ryan only wants an iPhone hahaha.

To the commentor about the cloud app, I agree I don't want that garbage it sucks to have to disable it everywhere I turn these days.

The changeover to LTE is worth it, even months when I travel every week and have no chance to get on wifi I've never hit my 2GB cap. Battery life seems fine aside from when I was in Saudi as it would take forever to get a signal when powered on (not likely a problem for you I'm guessing!). As for the cloud stuff, I have mine set to only do the sync crap over wifi. There'll be a 5S most likely this fall but I doubt it'll be groundbreaking.

There, back on topic. :D

    • We've been fans of the 40-20-40 front seat in the lower trims; specifically the leather option on the "3-across" version of the  40-20-40. I hope this can still be ordered in the "Silverado" or RST trim packages.  AND .... if dual exhausts are a part of the Custom trim,  does that mean a V8 package is available on Customs ?  Has the RST trim been discontinued ?  When ordering a V8 on one of these lower trims .... must it be the 5.7 ?  Or, on 4WD units can the 6.6 be ordered ?
    • I like it.   In a world of vehicle front ends that look like they've had a little too much nipping and tucking, I appreciate that GM went with a bold and professional look for the new Silverado and kept the aggression understated. The new 1500 looks a little more like the current 2500.   The interior looks well done as usual, although I'm not a fan of billboard screens on the dash. At least recess the gauge cluster screen. I see passenger screens as "keeping up with the Joneses'" in automotive interiors of late, which is fine. I don't think they belong in most pickups, but choice is good. Maybe some day I'll appreciate having one. Probably not, but, maybe.   Yet another steering wheel and airbag design. I wonder what it costs to have so many different models of airbags and buttons and steering wheel frames. IMO, pick a good one and stick with it. The new one is very...luxurious...looking. Again, not bad, but also not what I'd expect in a pickup.   GM has left us awaiting engine choice announcements and official details.     What will I be ordering on day one?   Nothing. I like my 2025 and it would be silly to get rid of it just to have a 2027.
    • I'm also waiting to see if they confirm Apple CarPlay, because I'm not interested in subscription fees just to use the hardware I already purchased.    In closeups it looks like it gets the Colorado/Canyon center screen based headlight controls which I despise. They also appear to lose all the hard switches for functions like seat heating and cooling, parking sensors, lane control, traction control, etc. which means they're all screen/menu based, so verdict is out on how well those will work with gloves or wet/dirty hands.  Admittedly they don't show the left knee area of the dash, but I don't see hard switches for locker control on the ZR2, and the "mode" switch appears to eliminate the rotary dial with a quick way to access tow/haul.  My 2021 has had multiple screen failures and at times the screen just locks up, goes black, or reboots while driving even after replacement, so loosing the ability to access many of these functions, especially lighting control would be pretty frustrating.   There aren't enough photos or detailed trim details other than one mention of "available microfiber trim" to confirm, but the use of microfiber on the seats and or center console is a deal killer for me.  Just because you drive a ZR2 or High Country, doesn't mean you don't work out of it, and that material is difficult at best to keep clean and looking decent.   Lexus and several other brands are using it on seats, dash, and door panels now, I assume as a cost and weight saving measure,  and it looks horrible 1-2 years into ownership.  I see what appears to be piano black on the doors and center console in some photos, which also has no place in ANY vehicle in my opinion because it mars and scratches too easily, especially for a truck.  Will be interesting to see what GMC comes out with when the Sierra is released as far as materials go.
    • Im a fan.  Simply moving the screen up helps the look of the interior.  I feel like GM dropped the ball on the current gen having the screen not at the same level as the top of the gauge cluster.  The GMCs look better with the vents above the screen to close that gap.
    • I hear you, its just not something one would even think of that the new oil in the container isn't filtered to a spec one would expect it to be.    As to a passenger vehicle theme and the maintenance requirement to meet to ensure a warranty is honored, these days with claims of life time transmission fluid on some models and the limited amount of oil changes that would bring one to the end of the factory warranty, that sells vehicles for those that like to hear "easy care maintenance free", but the manufacturer certainly knows different as to what that more than likely means for the longevity of some of the components if given that minimum spec maintenance. Then again I imagine there are a fair number of people that really don't care as long the vehicle gets them a certain number of years down the road because they are the type that want the next new thing, new and improved ... more bells and crap etc on the new one on the show room floor. Manufacturers have learned the phycological game to entice the customer out of their money !
