Tranny over heating while towing

I also believe that ambient temperature has a lot to do with trans temp. I monitor mine with an Aeroforce Intimidator, and the highway temps when not towing are very predictable. It is almost always( 2 x ambient temp) + (15-20%). A little less predictable when towing, but with my Hayden aftermarket cooler, it never reaches 210F unless towing up an extended hill on a very hot day.

I had that problem until I replaced my tranny lines and my radiator, but my truck had 300k+ when I did that. It shouldnt be getting that hot. I normally see no more than 180 when towing 5000lbs on my 1500 with a 5.3

I don't think fluid would have much impact. Buy a aftemarket transmission cooler if you are worried, I would if I towed alot.

ya, mine usually around 180 too, but lately it's been around 200-210. And I have the 6.0, I would think the truck can handle this abuse. And my truck only has 80000

Yes it is, but you shorten the life running at countinuous hot temps if you tow a lot.

The factory transmission cooler on my 2011 w/the 5.3 is no bigger than a large print paperback novel. Woefully inadequate when the temps get hot. AND it does have the so called towing package.

We still 't have an answer if the OP saw the "transmission hot" message on the DIC!

What do you all recommend for upgrade cooler? I need something that hooks up to the factory lines since i had them replaced last year already

Here's one persons solution using A Hayden 679. You'll want to buy a stacked plate cooler. Tube and fin coolers provide lower performance.

To disconnect the lines, there is a clip that must be removed.

Yes it is. What you posted is a tube and fin. Go to a stacked plate cooler. It would replace your current factory cooler. Remember, the bigger the better.
