exDodgeguy Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 OK so I've driven diesals for 12 years and before that it was a 3o yr old dodge that bore little resemblance to modern engines. The truck has 166,000 miles and I am going to start with plugs and wires. I'll do the Air Filter and replace it with either a K&N or an AirRaid. I was going to try the injector cleaner(Techron was suggested). What other things do I need to do/or have done? I'll have the Oil changed and let them lube what needs it while they are there. I also will have someone else drain and flush the tranny while replacing the filter.
txab Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 Front and rear diff. T. Case Brake fluid flush Cooling system flush. Belts/hoses if necessary Power steering flush.
tanked_darren Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 I think your wasting money getting away from the stock air filter. They are a good design already. Sent from my Nokia 5190 using Tapatalk 2
exDodgeguy Posted May 19, 2013 Author Posted May 19, 2013 Tanked, how many fram air filters would it take to equal the cost of a K&N? 4 maybe 5? Sounds like a good choice to me. I'm not looking for extra power or anything, I know that is a BS claim (hey if you have different opinion on that, great I am not looking to argue the point). I am one of those people who will keep a vehicle until it is dead dead dead. So I am looking at long term. @TXab thanks for the suggestions.
white1500 Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 Fram air filters are more than adequate, I've never had problems with them. But don't skimp out on oil filters and fluids, that's where you get what you pay for.
MikeNH Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 K&N does not filter to the same level paper ones do, oiling is a pain too. I'd stick with OE type filters.
exDodgeguy Posted May 19, 2013 Author Posted May 19, 2013 Ok after your responses I decided to do some looking. I am surprised by the testing results I found. I guess I'll stick to paper filters. I always bought the hype. I knew the airflow thing was BS but I always thought the K&N would at least perform as well. Damn, I bought those for three of my trucks.
tanked_darren Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 The stock filter is way cheaper to use than one of those K&N you'll gain nothing using K&N best you found this site huh? I too kill all vehicles I own.
tanked_darren Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 The only serious power gains are made from serious engine changes or actual tuning of the computer. That is it.
exDodgeguy Posted May 21, 2013 Author Posted May 21, 2013 Ok, so I got the plugs and wires changed the old ones weren't completely shot but definitely not new. The two at the rear on either side really suck balls. Otherwise it went pretty well. I forgot how much I hated working on cars. No I really shouldn't say that. I take pride in keeping them up I just get frustrated by trying to get my very large hands into some cramped spaces.
