I think the 4.10's run the engine at optimal RPMs at highway speeds. I put taller tires on my 4.10 8.1L truck and had to run 72 mph to get rpm's where I got better fuel mileage. I get my best highway mileage at right around 2100 rpm.

Have an 03 1500 HD and the previous owner told me I it had 4.10s but my rpo code says the truck is equipped with 3.73s but is it possible that the previous owner had the dealer install 4.10s

I dare suggest that in areas such as Tennessee where we have rolling hills that 4.10's would probably yield better gas mileage. My 3.42 truck is constantly downshifting, even on interstate.

I agree. While the 4.10s may not be as good on the highway unloaded, out in the country of PA where I live, they do better than 3.73s. My truck UPSHIFTS up hills rather than downshift. I can pull any hill I want in 4th gear lockup unloaded
