With Introduction of Dexos, GM DIY Oil Changes now more expensive than

This made me giggle. I was being all high speed, low drag this weekend intending to change the oil in all my vehicles including my new Sierra with around 3,000 miles. Purchasing 7 quarts of oil & filter from the BMW dealership for the new-enough model 335i cost ~$70. Purchasing 6 quarts of oil & filter from Chevy for the old farm truck cost... $75. Considering I was changing the oil in the truck just because the new hadn't worn off, when the gentleman rang up the $75 charge I politely declined and decided to wait for my free oil change when the oil monitor hit 15% or so. Alas, I still find it funny it cost more to change the oil in the old farm truck than the wife's stereotyped snob-mobile. I wonder how the GMC dealership is going to cover the $32.95 oil change special I got in the mail the other day? Must be the volume at which they're purchasing the dexos, that's it.

 

Also, time between oil changes is not a defense as BMW goes 15,000ish miles between changes, if one wanted to.

Why buy oil and filter at the dealership?

Buying the oil from the dealership is why its so expensive. I just did my truck last weekend and paid $55 for 6 qts of Mobil 1 and a Fram filter. That was at Oreilly, Walmart is even cheaper.

6 quarts of DEXOS AC-Delco 5W-30 oil,and an AC-Delco oil filter from my dealership is only $32.45 plus tax.

Actually thats what we charge here at the dealership for 6 qts. of Mobil1 and a filter.....$54.65,so the dealership isn't always expensive.

Mobil 1 Extended life synthetic oil(6 qt) & filter were $45 at Auto zone a couple weeks back.

 

Each dealership marks things up differently & not thinking dexos is the reason the dealer is charging $75.

took my wifes van in for its first free oil change. The bill ($0) showed $84.95 for 0W-20 synthetic and a filter. It has not gone back since. Wix filters and Mobil 1 0w-20 and 30 mins of my time

Wally World has the 5 qt jug of M1 synthetic for $22.49 each. That comes out to $4.50/qt.

Buy from some place other than your dealer. You should be able to get almost 2 changes for that price.

Yep, 22.49 + 6.xx for the extra quart + 3.xx for an ac delco oil filter, should put an oil change at About $32 and some change.

$32 for a syn oil change is pretty good considering places charge that $60-70 range your paying on that BMW. I use pennzoil plat with either a pureone or wix oil filter.

I run Pennzoil Ultra and NAPA Gold filters, made by WIX.

 

It is crazy expensive up here. I buy my oil filters buy the pack to save cash. If you buy them individually, you pay $10.99 each. If you buy a 12 box, you pay $5.99 each. My truck and my Fiance's 2012 Sierra both use the same oil filter, so it only makes sense. I order my oil through the place I work at, as we have a discount with a local auto parts supplier. I can get my 6 liters of Pennzoil Ultra for $60.

You can get Quaker State Ultimate Durability cheap at Walmart. It's Dexos approved.

Oil changes in a dealer are basically loss leaders to get customers in the door for upsells. Upsells are where the money is. Just because they never up sold you on anything does not mean the they did not get the next person.
