2011 Brake issue

The dealership says my front rotors are warped, the truck is a 2011 with 34k(mostly hwy), I have never had rotors go out this fast. The front pads still have another 30k left. I am curious if anyone else or if this is a common issue with the GMC 1500 4x4?

On a similar note, the service tech wants to "clean and adjust the rear brakes", I asked why, the dealership claim its needed to be done, to clean and adjust rear drums? I could see when the vehicle needs a brake job. I asked the tech, he said they needed to be adjusted(should be automatic). Sounds like the cause of the warped rotors, but the dealership doesn't think so.

Thoughts?

I wish they would pay for it, but they are saying brakes are consumable items, I am trying to get the dealership to handle the issue, the guy said they would not have an issue trying to cover it under warranty if the problem happened at 15k, but at 35k they cant put it into the system. To me is sounds like I need to push further and talk to his boss........

Its the sad fact that rotors are warped at 34k, with no heavy trailer towing, just dirtbikes in the back. If a tech is wanting adjust the rear brakes, which means the rear drums self adjusters are not working properly. Those should be changed out when drum pads are worn out. The front brakes still have over half their life left. Which means I am not ridding the brakes like an old lady. I understand GM wants to make money, but this is disappointing that a turn of the rotors and reworking of drum brakes are already needed, this should be near the 50-60k mark.

It's well known that GM brakes arn't the best. I had multiple issue with warped rotors on my 08 Sierra, I had those nice polished '20 wheels that were the cause. My current truck has the regular '18 and I have 31k on her now and need pads, but the rotors seem to be good (no vibrations when breaking). We have a GM employee on this site that takes complaints. Other than that you might need to shell out for new rotors, it stinks I know but what choice do you have.

Good luck!

My 09 had warped rotors at 12,000 miles, and they wouldn't cover it. When the TSB came out they turned the rotors, and replaced the pads, but it still shook after that. My 2011 has over 16,000 miles on it, and the brakes are smooth as glass.

My wife's Cruze had warped rotors at around the 15,000 mile mark too. Now the only thing I can come up with is that my 09 truck, and her Cruze both had rear drums, but my 11 has rear disc. Not sure if that makes a difference or not because I didn't notice any difference in stopping power between the disc or drums when I switched trucks.

I wonder did they really measure the runout, etc on the rotors to determine they are warped or did they just assume they are warped because of the shaking?

On my truck I pull the rear drums off once a year and just clean out the break dust and put some lube on the adjuster, pivot point and parking brake cable, apply anti-seize to the hub(so the drum wont seize to the hub). I also clean and lube up the front brakes. I have almost 63,000 miles nearly all hi-way/back country roads and my brakes/rotors are all original with tons of pad life. My brakes look like new on my 2011 Silverado 1500 62,784 miles and my 2006 Silverado 2500HD has 124,234 miles and still have 35-40% pad life left. My trucks live a babied life driving wise. The Duramax pulls horse trailers for a living and the 2011 is a daily driver with 1500-1800 lbs at times in the bed.

Any mods to the Truck: Lift kit, bigger tires, rims? Yes the rear drums are self adjusting if the adjuster are not seized up. You could of gotten a batch of bad rotors would be my guess. It seems to be that way from what I've seen. Most trucks get great mileage out of their brakes and a few slip through and hardly get any mileage.
