Ok guys getting ready to make a big road trip and thinking about a dash cam, what kind and how well do you think that they work? Lets here the good and bad. Thanks :jester:

Go pro on the windsheild or dash. 1080p, decent cost, can be controlled with a smartphone

I want to use it just to catch the sights of the road and where I am going I think it would be fun to have to catch what ever goes on. I will be spending about 15 days on the go so I need to know how much recording it can do what type of media to use, and since I will not have a computer with me some way to down load or store what I want to keep and then just overwrite what I don't want to keep. Going to be fast action around 600 mph and some up close video. :jester:

The go pro takes a micro or mini sd. Dont remember which. Do if you get a big one or a few of them it can record everything

Go pro is the way to go, we play with them on trails and dunes very good quality and picture/video. Wish I could afford one myself.

I have a GoPro bike mount hanging from my rear view mirror. It works great. Eats up a ton of memory on full resolution. I also elastic band my iPhone to my mirror to Black Box some on my commutes. It has a map and audio. Perfect for when that Ebike, comes off the side walk and into the side of my truck. Ediots!

Kinda wish I had one last week. I had some road raging physco chick follow me off the highway in NH and she stopped on the off ramp to try and get me to stop. I went by her in the grass but she caught up at the next light and proceeded to call me all sorts of interesting things without getting out of the car that time. If she did she'd of been staring down the barrel of my Glock, which I had in my hand but hidden from view by then. I was too shocked/amused to think to get her plate to report it.

I can't stand people that do that If I had a dash cam all the times I've dealt with people in the wrong who got mad at me for defensive driving I could start a tv show.

You realize that a dash cam not only records others but your driving behavior too?

Road raging...whats your definition of it? Going "off road" to pass someone is ok?

Having a gun in your hand because of someone is yelling things at you?

Am I going to meet my fate when I make a mistake when you're close by?

You can't even decide if you're shocked or amused?

How in hell are people like you allowed to carry guns???

You better buy a mirror and watch yourself instead of a dash cam.

OK guys which go pro do you have and how do you like it? I have looked at them and the reviews that I have read that say go pro is crap mention the "new" black but what about the white and silver ones? I only have two weeks to make up my mind and get it before I leave. :jester:

@ OP

I've got the I-tronic in my truck.

The cam broke down due to the heat in the car in the summer.

In my company truck I've got a cheap camera like this:

http://www.amazon.ca/Monitor-Dashboard-VEHICLE-Accident-RECORDER/dp/B008912U82/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1376433982&sr=8-4&keywords=dash+cam

Still works. Shuts himself off when it gets to hot.

The quality of the pictures is not so perfect. But if you need the cam for 'just in case' recording it'll do fine.

If you wanna record the sight you better go with GoPro or BlackVue or even I-tronics.

Just turn the cam off when the truck is sitting in the hot summer sun.

She went nuts cause I passed her in the right lane. Limit is 65, she was doing 60. Right lane passing is legal in NH. She then went into the breakdown lane to pass a car to stay with me. She ended up ahead of me getting off the highway. She stopped on the exit ramp and got out of her car. That kind of behavior is not normal and given that it was dark I was concerned about what was going to happen next, along with being concerned about being rear ended because traffic NEVER backs up that far on the ramp. The safest thing to do was to go around her. At that point I saw her follow me so I made my pistol accessible because I had no idea what her intent was besides nearly getting both of us hurt or killed on the ramp. I had it in hand but hidden when she pulled up and started yelling all sorts of vulgar insults. When I realized she was just nuts and not a real threat the pistol went back safely where it came from.

Judge me if you want but there was nothing I'd do differently given what happened. If I sat on that ramp one of us would have been hit by someone exiting the highway and there's no telling if she was going to try and get into the truck. And I was amused by some of the things she said as insults. I can't repeat them on here but the absurdity of what she said is what made me realize she wasn't going to be a threat to anyone but herself with the way she drives.

And don't dare question my decision to carry. I've never, ever felt the need to draw my pistol in six years. But when someone gets out of their car screaming on an exit ramp if you're not worried about what's going to happen next you need your head checked.

And I love the cleaver/selective editing of my post to make me look like an ass. You should work for MSNBC.
