Looks like a semi-submersible drilling rig with one of the pontoons half-full of seawater.  I see the BP colors on the derrick...wonder if it's one that I've been on?

Probably not, considering that I've only been on about 5-6 and there are probably 200+ out there.

But, yes, that has all the makings of a VERY bad day.

Turns out this is the Petrobras P-36 production platform, although it is a converted old drilling vessel.

Three explosions in one of the pontoons and that baby is sinking.  One confirmed fatality as of yesterday.

It's all the talk around the oilfield industry right now...we are getting safety alerts everyday this week about it.

FYI

I think it finished sinking didn't it?

That whole situation sucks!

Yes, it sank 2 days ago. A total of 10 people were killed when several explosions ripped through the rig. The platform was less than a year old and was the worlds largest. It was located just off the eastren coast of South America. If I remember right it sank in 44,000 feet of water.

44,000 feet is definitely not right.  The deepest oil wells drilled in the world right now are in 7,000 feet of water depth.  Probably more like 4,400 or 400 feet.  If it's a platform I would guess 400 feet.  Haven't been reading the Safetly Alerts about it lately, so I don't know for sure.

My apologies, 76Bsub was correct, I had my figures incorrect. It was 1.35km or .84 miles or 4400 feet in depth. This is per CNN's WEB Site.

Sorry for the screw up
