Another 4L60e Craps the Bed

EDIT: I should have typed in 4L60e (RPO of M30) My bad.

The title says it all...last week while driving home, I turned a corner and bang, no forward thrust. I was able to manually shift into first and move from the drive lane out of rush hour traffic. Truck is an '06 GMC 1/2 ton Ext Cab, 4wd with L33 engine and has 62800 miles on it.

Just got the truck back from the tranny shop today...I was told the input sprag gear and sun gear shell broke. I had the shop rebuild the tranny putting heavy duty parts (also installed the corvette servo) into it to help with the towing durability. Took a hit to the check book of $2275....ouch!

Topic title corrected. Was the truck tuned? I cant seem to get mine to blow and I have a tuned 6.0 and just a vette servo in it

No sir no tune all stock (changed the gears to 4.10 however).

During the summer, I tow a 23' camper (12000 lbs total weight with occupants, wood, trailer etc...)

The tranny gave zero indications it was going to grenade..

Fluid changes every 30000 miles, fluid was like new without burnt smell.

Just the luck of the draw I suppose.

Do you keep an eye on the trans temp while towing

GM changed those parts around 2006 to newer (stronger) versions. It doesn't sound like you got them though, which is a bummer. You should be good to go now, and a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new truck. At the prices they have on new trucks now, taxes would be that much. I'm surprised that it was that high though. The last transmission I had rebuilt (maybe 7 years ago) was closer to $1200, but it wasn't a 4L60.

I always watch the temps...never overheated the tranny. In addition, I've also changed the fluid/filter 30000 miles or less (the first oil change was on GM at 14000 miles as the front seal leaked) the second one on me.

In talking with the mechanic, he said that they have a lot of these transmissions come through the shop with the same problems.

Maybe I should have converted it to the 4l80e for a bullet proof tranny...would have added a lot more pain to the bank account however.

Mine went in the summer but was still driveable, just wouldn't always shift. Had the shop do a rebuild with all upgraded parts and the bank took a $3700CDN hit. Also my truck had about 250,000km on it so really my tranny did me well.

II have a 07 with 145K. Knock on wood still shifting great. Used and abused. Lots of tow miles in hilly areas, 5-6k lbs and a lot of off road abuse. This is my 2nd 4L60E and have had no transmission problems. Sold the last one with 160 but wasn't as abusive with it.
