How many of you guys are running non-OE tires on your 14 Silverado or

I haven't even gotten my truck yet and am kicking around the idea of swapping out the tires. Due to the way I ordered it I didn't have a choice on the tires and got stuck with the 20" chrome wheels and the all season tires. I am guessing it is going to come with 275/55/20 Eagle LS2s which I don't care for the looks and have heard they aren't very good in the wet and or snow. I would have preferred an all terrain tire that was a little more aggressive looking. Being in Michigan performance in the snow will be somewhat important but I don't really care for anything that is going to drone real bad on the highway either.

For you guys that have swapped them did you stick with factory size? Seeing how I am going to tow a pretty decent size (heavy) trailer I wondered if anyone has went to a LT285/55/20 that is load range E rated. Did you have the TPMS and or ECM reprogramed to compensate? What about clearance from what I have read I wasn't sure if that size would clear without a level kit or not.

What are some of the preferred tires you guys have ran and any to stay away from?

Thanks

This is exactly the tire you will get. I live in Philly, so weather isn't *that* big an issue here, and I think the tires ride real nice and have gotten a lot of compliments on the rims. That said, those tires certainly don't get very good reviews in snow, and if I lived in a state like MI (GF lives in Kalamazoo, just got off the phone with her and it's snowing today, their second snow of the year) I would probably swap them out too. That or have a whole lot of sandbags ready to lay in the bed atop the axel....

Yup snowing here today too. I like the wheels also but the tires not so much. I have a buddy that works at Discount tire who will give me a deal trading in the take offs.

I also have access to the factory service and reprograming info. I have not played around with the Global A/GM GDS2 all that much so I don't know if the TPMS stuff is like the old ones where you can select the tire size and set the pressures. I did see in another thread about the BCM reprogram that someone had the pressures adjusted when they went in to have it done. So I am guessing it may be done via TIS reprogramming which means I may be able to calibrate it for non stock size/pressure without having to go with an aftermarket tuner. Unfortunately I would need a vehicle to experiment on to see what I can tweak and I will be lucky if I get mine this year.

How long will you keep your truck? If you have the money to spend now, one other alternative is a second set of studless tires. I just bought 20" Michelin X Ice2's from Tire Rack 275/55r/20 for $704 and $70 rebate in the form of a prepaid MasterCard. If you buy rims too they mount and balance them free. Shipping cost about a wash with our sales tax. Not cheap with wheels and TPMs but with two sets of tires you get a lot of miles on both combined. You can buy a reset tool for about $70 or have the dealer reprogram tire changes/tire rotations.

I did this on a 2007 Tundra and my annual expense was about $200 over 7 years and tires still had 40% tread left on Bridgestone Blizzack's. As an active snowmobiler I put on a lot of winter miles-didn't track tire miles but 25-30m my est. After driving with good studless tires I will never go back to noisy off road tires. The safety factor is another consideration. For winter tires avoid chrome, salt will corrode the finish quickly. Chrome look PVD finish, aluminum or painted aluminum best....

Consumer Reports has a good review of tires -Michelin top rated tire last report.

Edit-factory Chrome is OK with salt....talking aftermarket wheels.

Tpms is no big deal I own an an independent repair shop and have a TPMS tool. I also have access to the factory GDS2 (GM Global Diagnostic System) although I have not done a lot with it as we have not seen a ton of the 2010 on up stuff that requires the new scan equipment. As far as tires go I am going to lease this thing and will probably sell or turn it in with less than 30k on it around 3 years from now so no reason to have summer and winter tires. Honestly I could probably live with the factory tires but the hot rodder in me wants to tweak it a little.

I can tell you now, once I order my All Terrain with the 6.2l part of teh deal will be to have the dealer take the brand new tires off and put a set of Nitto Terra Grapplers on the truck. I cant stand Goodyear tires, had them on my Vette and they sucked as did the ones on my previous truck.

285/55's will fit with no issues. doubt the difference in speed would be noticeable. The 10 plies will let you know quickly how light the body on these trucks are and how stiff the ride is.

I'm running 34 inch Toyos on 20 inch Fuel wheels. Fabulous ride. Don't forget to upsize your spare if you go oversize on your tires. 34 inch spare fit in the stock spare well just fine, actually room to spare, pun intended.

I'm the guy who changed the TPMS settings during the BCM upgrade. I run 50/45, so I set the TPMS to 45/40. This weekend I went from 90 degree temps to 19 degrees. In the morning my pressures were at 41/36 and there was no TPMS light, so I do not know what the threshold below nominal pressure is to activate the light.

The dealer is only allowed to put in stock wheel and tires sizes to the ECM, and they are all around 31.5-32.0 inches in diameter. If you run larger, Hypertech works great for dialing it in exactly right, and it does make a difference in the shifting, AFM, and mileage. After 10K miles my overall average is 20, epa for the 5.3 4x4 is 16/22. My best tank was 24 from Flagstaff to Phoenix, second best is 22 on road trips from ABQ-PHX cruising at 80, and also 22 from the Grand Canyon to Phoenix. I'd say getting epa numbers running oversize tires and a small lift is pretty good.

I swapped my OEMs within a week. Have best-rated Michelins bought and installed at All-American Tire for only $500. They kept my take-offs, and I'm riding super quiet and smooth

which Michelins and what size did you go with?

Running 275/55/20 BFG Rugged Terrain. Very smooth ride and more aggressive look than stock. Would have gone even more agressive, but I did not want to sacrifice the quiet ride.

Wife had Wrangler Silent Armor ATs on her 4Runner and those were great tires. Was considering them for this truck but would have had to wait for them.

Looks good, I have not talked to my buddy at Discount tire yet regarding his recommendations but I like the looks of the BFGs. I do know he doesn't have as much wiggle room on the price on them compared to other brands. I also like the looks of the Cooper Zeon LTZ and have had good luck with Michelins over the years. Not sure how a 285/55/20 load range E would ride but the Michelin LTX A/T2 looked pretty nice also
