Tire Chain Question

You have to have spots to put on the chains and take them off, like mountain passes do. Otherwise you will get people using them in places not needed and wrecking the roads.

Mud tires suck in pretty much anything other than mud, unless you have them siped up before snow season.

I liked how the mudgrips on my 1990 dug in the snow, it was unstoppable. Literally. Had to go slow and brake early.

Get the right amount of ballast, not too much, and really good tires, and you can do just about anything. I wouldn't worry about chains for a passenger vehicle.

I had tire chains on my 4x2 before I got this 4x4. In really deep snow it was imperative. If I had no weight in the truck it was truly worthless in the snow. Just adding about 600-700 lbs to the back would help some. For deep snow I needed weight + chains. They are kind of a pain, but it was the only option sometimes. www.vulcantire.com has excellent options for chains. Just make sure you pick up some tensioners also, regardless of what anything says about not needing them. Also, for the extra links, to keep them from flapping and hitting stuff, I had great luck using heavy duty zip ties to keep them tied down.

to the op, i really cant imagine you would need chains, seems overkill to me. ive gone through over a foot of snow in a half ton with AT tires in 4 wheel.

I had the regular link chains, NOT the v bar reinforced. I think they were under the "better" category. Just the standard issue cross tire link chains.

I know that most don't need or want chains, but sometimes I am required to be somewhere at a certian time and you don't want to be late or not show up for ANY reason. When we have snow here more times than not we have ice before the snow and then top the snow off with ice again, and the snow plows here just don't do anything to the ice they just kinda move it around. Also most of my driving is on minor streets so they don't get anything done to them. Thanks for all the help with this.

oh and get Z chains over real chains...ive been using them for 2+ years on my 2wd work vans and they are awesome, dont even need to move the vehicle to put them on and they take 5 mins to put both on.

Well thanks to you guys (jk) I ordered some v-bar chains from Tirechain.com late Sunday night and got a notice from the Post Office yesterday that I had a package so I stopped on my way to work this morning and picked up my new chains and with the forecast saying we were going to get rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow over the next 13 to 16 hours I was glad. Just posting this when I got that call from the boss "Hey we are having some problems can you come in for a little bit?" since I like my job and their has not been any traffic on the state highway in front of my house for the last hour to hour and a half, guess who is chaining up before they leave the house!!!
