2500HD 6.0 Cold Start

19,000 miles

Every once and a while I will get a clacking at start up thats very brief. Is its something I should be concerned about? It goes away very quick, under 5 seconds.

I use mobil one synthetic every six months which is about 4,000 miles

I've been around engines for years and this is normal behavior.

That's normal for a gas engine, It takes a little time to get the oil up to the top.

Try a different brand of oil filter and stay away from the cheapest Frams from Wal-Mart. This helped my 2007 6.0.

Once its running, it's good. I am also getting a constant "chick chick chick" once its warmed up. Cant tell if its the injectors or bottom end. I may bring it in to have it looked at...

This may be what is going on...can't say 100% but...

You may have a vehicle with a concern of cold engine tick noise.

 

This concern will diminish within 50 seconds of a cold start.

 

The noise shuts off like you have flipped a switch.

 

This concern may be a vehicle design characteristic as the ECM calibration is designed to meet cold start emissions.

 

The noise that you hear is actually combustion taking place in the exhaust manifold. When the timer hits the 50 seconds it advances the timing and the

noise is immediately gone

My 5.3 and the last two 6.0's I had make/made this noise. Normal far as I can tell. Many others I've driven do it as well.

i have the same issue on my 12 2500 Hd 6.0 keep me posted on this if you happen to take to the dealer. my dealer has never been able to duplicate,i only have 10 k miles on it and its done it since new, i use dexos GM oil and the gold AC delco filter.

Do you guys get a tick tick tick tick from your bottom end when the truck is warmed up? Sounds like an exhaust leak almost. I don't wanna waste my time bringing it in if it's normal. It's like a loud injector almost.

Perhaps a hydraulic lifter that has bled down a bit when you first start it up?

Going to the dealer with it Friday. I also noticed when I start the truck in the cold cold, lets say below 15-20, I will get a humming in the engine bay about 5 seconds after the truck is running. The humming will last about 5 seconds.

The day I'm going it's not going to be super cold so I'm just going to mention it to the service manager. Plus I have to get the truck there in the morning.

Dealer could not duplicate the tick when warm nor the humming when cold start in extreme cold. The cold snap broke the day I brought it to the dealer. So next cold morning I'm gonna get it down there and for them to hear

My work truck does the same (08 2509hd) has since new and it's soon to be replacement (12 2500hd) does it too

Tick tick tick tick. Very similar to the start of an exhaust leak. It's def quieter when it's fully hot. When warming I hear it the best
