I saw it mentioned that the cap may be held on with 3m tape. Are you guys seeing this on them? If you are, are you adding more tape back, or will they hold fine with the screw? Found a set of onyx black finally and can't wait to tackle this. I just wanted to have everything I need ready when they arrive.

I changed chrome caps to the non painted black and there was no tape behind them. The clips hold them on just fine. Id only use tape if a clip was broken on the cap itself

Got mine put on last night in the dark, was super simple as everyone in the thread mentioned. Once I saw how the handle seats with the e clip it was cake. I ended up using some speaker wire as my fishing line kept slipping off when I would pull it. Thanks for the thread OP and everyone else who contributed! [emoji106][emoji106]

Aaaaaaaaaarg. OK so while swapping out my door handles I backed out one of the rear screws too far and the retaining/tension nut fell into the door trim cavity. Please tell me Im not the only mo-ron to do this. I looked in Lowes last night for 20 minutes and couldn't find a replacement. Looks to be a ¼ inch square nut but may be metric (7mm?).

I guess I could take the door trim off and recover it but after removing the 4 hex screws it feels very stubborn. I could easily make matters worse. I guess i'll go to the parts department at the dealership tomorrow and try to get a nut that I cannot find on any parts diagram (!)....unless anyone has a better idea.

Thanks in advance if you can help.

Richard E.

PS i have the handle installed so the door will close and lock. Its just reinstalling the the small rear part to the handle I need to do.

Maybe you could use a magnet of some sort to grab it without taking the panel off? I know I've seen some long antenna looking poles with little magnets on the ends; No idea what they're for, or if you could manage to get it back out with something like that. May be worth a shot?

It's on every door. I broke down and bought the GM tool for installing/removing the handles. Almost makes the task too easy! :)

As for the Torx screw. I found all four of them to actually get a bit "tight" when they are backed out enough. Even so, it's best to have one hand on the cap while loosening the screw, and keep jiggling while loosening until it's loose enough to come off.

Can you tell me how to use the GM tool? The write up I found says you insert it after removing the rear trim piece. How

does it get oriented?

I've never seen the tool, but I would imagine you only need it to slide the new handles on. Taking them off is a breeze, catching that "E" clip in there when putting them back on is what I'd say the tool is for. Post a pic of the tool if you can.

Edit* does it look like this?:

From the text with the pic, I gather that you place the tool behind the handle before removing the handle and that the tool prevents the E clip from popping out of place when the handle is slid out. I just can't quite picture how to insert it into the mechanism.

I'd say the little bend on the left of the tool in the pic points toward the front of the truck and the end with the hole in it points toward the back. Slide the little bend in behind the clip and the long section with the hole lays against the truck body. That's my 2 cents but I haven't used one, this is just based off my experience when swapping mine out.

    • Common Sense Assembly   Your driveline is forgiving of the occasional mistake. It will even often forgive the random serious blunder. But it will not forgive a continuous bad habit.      What? Not everything needs to be a five thousand word essay.
    • We drove about 15 minute east today to visit a friend and saw a steep increase in price in the same county. About 50 cents a gallon steepper.
    • Sure about that? A degree wheel and a dial indicator would lower your degree of assurance in that statement. 😉    It why we have offset keys and dialable timing sprockets. Just say'n.... I've built a few and have never seen one "On the money".
    • I will admit I haven't experimented much with pressure drops beyond the numbers I put in and part of that is that the numbers I used are fairly low and then found out it would trigger regardless at that 35 psi. Having said that I had tried before had changed the placard pressures and being that I have a 1 ton set to 80 on the placard for the rear I believe it triggered close to 60, the front I don't recall now for sure but thought maybe it could get close to 45 from that factory 60 placard pressure. So I never did figure out if it was a number of psi from placard pressure to the alarm or a percentage of the total placard number as some figured it was like a 25% drop from placard pressure would trigger it. So as to try and answer your question, I believe I set the placard pressure on the front to 47 or so and while I run the front tires at 40, they have dipped below that some if its colder and I haven't put "winter air" in yet and never once have had the front alarm go off. I would say that the answer your looking for is no, that if you set your placard pressure to 45, you have a certain amount of room to drop below that pressure before the alarm will go off.    The pressures you decide to run in your truck, that ends up being what makes sense to you based on what your carrying in your truck or if towing, then have to bump them back up to something that will carry the load in the rear and the fronts typically left at the same pressure. It all comes down to that chart I put the link to and using an accurate roadside scale to be your guide, both unloaded and then loaded to know your minimum safe pressures.    I just wish GM would allow a person to change the readings for the tire pressures to the English system of pounds as I have to look at that goofy metric reading that will never ever jive in my head and will go over and change it just to figure out what they are if need be and then change it back.
    • That part I understand, that the dealer can do it. But I'm not understanding why updates that were available to the truck since it left the factory, or the dealership originally, would not still be available to it without dealer intervention.   I'm thinking along the lines of recalls. They stay available until they are completed, regardless of whether they are in warranty or not, or in the hands of the original owner or not. Why not updates as well, especially since some of those can be safety related also?
