Sunglasses Holder

I would be fine with a milk crate for a seat.

You are right if they offer it, it should work. They didn't offer the sunglass holder as far as I know. It was just included.

I guess while we are whining about things, I should complain that my VW, my Dodge, my Escort AND my Audi all came with fake leather binders to keep my owners manual in. The SIlverado only came with a cheap generic Zip Lock baggie. I guess I should start a forum to complain about this "feature" being so cheap in a 45,000 truck.

I do not remember seeing the sunglass holder featured as a selling point in my window sticker. It was just something that was there. Nor did it list sunvisors or anything else that someone could critisize as an inadequate "feature" of the truck for sale.

Actually I think someone posted that the manual came in a zip lock bag and it was cheap.

Look if you dont have issue with it then that is great. But why come in this thread and laugh at people and their complaint. If you find it petty keep it to yourself... thats what im trying to get at. Plus have a nice day.

My Maui's barely fit. So much so as I am afraid they will get damaged while trying to remove them.

I guess you know I could put them in the bed of the truck. To some that may seem acceptable.

Actually, the holder itself would be large enough for most sunglasses. The problem is the opening.

If you're good with a Dremel this might work.

(Yes, it's possible that this thread will never die.)

Very disappointed in this option. I can't put any sunglasses in it.

It's funny that I found this thread with 7 pages of aggrivated folks just like myself. I ended up doing what luster posted above but I took a bit more off the bottom. The longest part was figuring out how to remove the sunglasses holder so I could use the dremel someplace other than in my truck. Needless to say, 1 hour later, I became a happier man who's Oakleys could actually fit and be removed without anger and fingerprints.

Haha... 90% of the time my sunglasses are propped up on top of my head.:cool:

Could you please tell us how you removed the sunglass holder

1. The panel with the home link and interior lighting buttons can be easy popped out. To remove it, let the sunglasses holder come down about half way so that you can get your fingers on there and then pull down on that panel and it will come out pretty easily.

2. Once you pop that panel out, it will just hang down due to all of the wires. You will see two hex screws attaching the back half of the overhead console to the headliner. Once those hex screws are removed, the overhead console can be carefully pulled down allowing you to access the one hex screw (drivers side) needing to be removed to take out the sunglasses holder. You do not need to remove the entire overhead console to do this mod, which is why I say carefully pull down on the overhead console to access the final hex screw needing to be removed. When you remove the hex screw, go ahead and remove the white grommet being held in by that hex screw.

3.The only thing that will be holding the sunglasses holder in at this point will be a black gear piece which you can make out in the picture luster posted above. This black gear is held in place by two tabs that just need to be popped out.

4. At this point you will have move the sunglasses holder around and the unit should be able to be removed.

5. The passenger side of the sunglasses holder has a spring system which hard to explain without a picture, but if you pay attention to that side when removing the sunglasses holder, you will have no problem reinstalling it.

6. Once the sunglasses holder is removed, use some painters tape to mark your cut lines and stuff a few paper towels in the sunglasses holder while cutting to make clean up a little easier.

7. Finally, follow these steps backwards to install sunglasses holder. Be sure to work slow and pay attention when removing sunglasses holder as it will make the reinstall much easier.

***the only thing I had trouble with when reinstalling the holder was getting the black gear reinstalled again. If you have small fingers, it should not be too hard, but a flat head screw driver is the best tool to use to pop it back into place***

I also found this thread below which I used to get a general idea on how to remove the sunglasses holder.

Hopefully I explained this well enough to help anyone modify their awful sunglasses holder that gm put in these trucks!

Thanks for the directions, when I have some free time I will give it a go.

During my test drive, I noticed that my sunglesses wouldn't fit and remarked to the salesman as such. He laughed and said something to the effect of "Yeah, for some reason they suck on these trucks". I laughed and told him I would just dremel it out when it starts to bug the crap out of me enough. Looks like I'm doing that some time this week...

I use the compartment for my plain jane glasses, my prescription sun glasses don't fit so I bought a clip thing from the dollar store that goes on the sun visor. Never really bothered me......
