I field stripped my AR and 1911 today to check out how dirty they are. any recommendations on what to use to clean up the internals. The AR is the worst of the 2.

I use Rem Oil in the aerosol can. Never had rust never had a problem

Use the little hose to flush the small parts out that you can't get to or need a gunsmith to take apart.

It really isn't rocket science, but the main thing is to wipe up all the excess.

Do not over lubricate. To much lubrication catches dust and gets you dirty faster and can cause problems. For most applications if you dry all the oil you can off the gun it will have enough lubrication left. There are spots on the gun that instruction books say put a drop of oil here, I found that you have enough oil left on the gun after you wipe it up. Of course exceptions may arise.

I do not have an AR, but on a rifle if possible always clean the bore from bolt end. Never pass the swab past the rifling at the end of the bore. Put your finger on the end of the bore to stop the swab before it exits. If you ever damage the rifling at the end of the bore it deteriorates your accuracy.

Fingerprints are your enemy when you store a gun. The oils in your had can set up a spot that can rust. I always put a gun up by holding it with a rag rather than naked hand.

Maybe I am a bit meticulous but I never store a gun after shooting, until I clean it and I clean it every time. I purposely leave it out so that it is in the way and I remember. If I put it up I tend to forget about it.

Lube isnt an issue, my main problem with the AR is carbon build up. There is some slight build up on the 1911 but nowhere near as bad as the AR

Should be able to flush it out or is it that tough.

Honestly never had one so dirty that Rem Oil wouldn't break it up and I had to use something to break down build up.

Keep in mind I am talking about Rem Oil in the Aresol can not the oil.

My understanding is that BreakFree CLP was specifically designed to clean and lubricate ARs. It has worked for me on everything except getting copper fouling out of the barrel for which I use Sweets 7.62 solvent.

Break free CLP has always been good for my M16/M4, M249, M240, etc. Granted you have to wipe it off pretty good in dusty and sandy conditions. Humid and wrt, not so much.

I will be scrubbing. And you said remoil and my mind went to my remoil wipes I use when I store the guns.

Wipes are an expensive. The oil, the wipes and aerosol can are all supposed to have the same component. But the aerosol does a better job at cutting buildup IMO. The oil just smears around, the wipes do not have enough oil on them and can't apply pressure.

Yea, I had the wipes for my shotgun to wipe down prior to storage

I use gun scrubber every now and then. It blows everything out... really impressive stuff. You must oil after use though.

I know this topic is old but I am bored at work brousing the forums.......

Brake parts cleaner will take care of that PITA to clean carbon build up. It works well to loosen and get rid of copper fouling also. Just be sure to get it washed off of any plastic right away.

When I shot a lot....IPSC, etc., I just used a small car parts solvent tank with fresh mineral spirits solvent. I had a few different brushes that fit the guns I was cleaning (1911) and it only took a few minutes to clean everything and blast it with air. Then a shot of your favorite lube and protectant.

Ballistol, Break Free CLP, Hoppes #9, frog lube... pick your poison.

I've been using BreakFree & Hoppes for last 4 years & am going to try out Ballistol now.
