Black smutt your referring to is normal. The DI engine is noisy.

Mine has tons of soot. I really noticed it after I changed the exhaust. I have the corsa with dual chrome tips and there always black. Apparently this is normal for the 14's and DI engine.

I'm not saying it is normal. I don't like the idea of black smoke on startup. Im saying that it "apparently" is normal with DI (direct injection) motors. I hope GM makes a software up date that reduces the amount of fuel it utilizes for start up.

It's very unlikely they will. Reducing the fuel on startup will light the cats off more slowly and increase emissions.

This does not seem to be that big of a deal, there are much more unpleasant issues others are dealing with.

Maybe the only issue the op has is the one he's asking about. So to him it may be a big deal.

sooty tailpipes is a product of direct injection. Same with "noisy" motor. It sounds like a sowing machine. all normal

Both issues are normal, the trucks run rich which is good versus lean which is bad.

My Camaro SS spits out carbon at times on start up and that is not a DI motor. Try the link to see about the noise. http://sandyblogs.com/techlink/?p=3134
