Weird AC Smell

Yes. I switch between outside air and cabin air on the climate control and that usually clears it up. I figure it's something inside the new system....new part smell or something.

How long have you had yours? I've had mine since Feb and it still has a weird AC smell sometimes

Has anyone checked their cabin air filters yet? Sometimes get a musty smell wondering if they are prone to getting wet

Same. I picked it up Feb 14th and I still have the smell on and off. I was going to change out the cabin air filter when I had some time to see if that helps.

It smells kind of like fresh mulch right?

Ok so if we all have the same smell (fresh mulch) we can definitely rule out environmental factors being that we don't live in the same part of the country. And it only does it with the AC, not the heat. I live in Virginia and I've only used the AC a couple of times since I bought the truck in February. Our climate won't get consistently warm until later next month going into June so I'm wondering if it's an issue of a new AC system that hasn't been used enough yet. I'm going to give it another month or so to see if it goes away with more usage. If not I'll definitely bring it up at my next oil change.

I thought that as well but I made sure to pay attention to my surroundings and it was doing it in areas where I wasn't around any mulch. I also kept it on inside circulation and the smell went away when I switched to outside air for a bit and then switched back to inside circulation.

Check your cabin filter. Could be time for a change.

Yeah I plan to hopefully do that this weekend when I have some time and see if that helps. My truck was built in September 2013, inspected in October, but I bought it in February so maybe sitting on the dealer lot for a while caused some funk to build up in the system.

This may be neither here nor there, but I never shut down a vehicle with the A/C still on. I know many do & feel big woop ta doo. I also like to 'blow out the system', fan on, A/C off for a while before shutting down. Yes there are drains for moisture, just habit I guess.

OBTW, I've usually have good long term luck with auto A/C systems. Anyone else do this?

on my '10 if i left it parked uphill i would get a smell (especially after a rain). i started parking it downhill on my driveway and never had the issue.

i've not had the '14 long enough to see if it has the same design or not. i've been parking uphill with no issue so far although i've not had to use the hvac much yet.

Gm sells a spray for this. Basically it's Lysol. Turn on the system full blower and spray a few ounces into the inlet at the base of the windshield. I've had to do this occasionally to our cars when the smell develops. Buy the least offensive Lysol scent. Not the original scent.
