Need Price Negotiation Advice

Well this morning I went out to grab some breakfast and my old 2004 Saturn Vue started rattling terribly with check engine light flashing. So basically it's seems like it's almost dead and I'm now going to be forced to get something.

I've been wanting a new truck anyway and there are some decent deals now, but I'm ticked I'll probably lose my trade value I was hoping for to offset TTL and fees.

So here is where I'm at, I've got a budget of about 30-31K to spend. For what I can afford it seem like I'll have to get a stock Texas Edition because that is what the dealers give the best incentives on. Which I'm ok with even though it wouldn't be my first choice.

So went by a dealership today that has the color and interior I'm looking for.

Here is what they offered for a 2014 CCSB with 5.3L V8 Texas Edition.

MSRP = $38,320

minus $750 option package discount

minus $3072 supplier discount

minus $2000 rebate

minus $500 bonus cash

minus $1000 Texas bonus cash

Final Sales Price = $30,998 + TTL and fees

With TTL + fees approx $33,000 - $33,500

Total incentives = $7322

How does this deal sound? Is it at all realistic I can get within my budget? Any tips and advice on how to negotiate down? Any other rebates and incentives for this month I might use?

If anyone has ever worked at dealership I'd like to hear how these things actually work with how they determine prices.

Tell them to give you their best price 1st, and if you like it, you'll take it. If not, walk.

A GOOD dealership will do that.

...don't discuss a trade until the price for the new truck is etched in stone.

How does sales price actually work? Is it MSRP - All Incentives - Trade = Sales Price

Or

Sales Price - Incentives - Trade = Final Price

Once you play the Supplier Discount card, there usually isn't any more wiggle room after that. Except for the other incentives they offer.

I didn't even use my supplier discount on mine, because I could negotiate a better deal without it. But you also have to have a salesman and sales manager that is willing to deal with you.

Like said earlier, you have to be willing or able to walk away, if you are looking for the best deal.

Just tell them you want their best price, sometimes you'll get it. The key is to get a good salesman, and a good sales manager.

Good luck!

That price sounds pretty good to me.

Just buy what you can afford. Do we all want the loaded out Denali? Hell yes we do! Can we all afford one without going into lots of debt? Nope. I have a sierra SLE and found a price I was quite comfortable in paying. That's the name of the game. Just don't go oveboard and you will be fine. Stay away from the dealer add ons as well.

What fees? What TTL? $2500 sounds a bit high for tags and tax. Make sure they are not loading profit back in with some stupid paperwork or filing fee that goes to them. I never finance the tags and tax. I pay it up front. When you finance it you are paying payments for years on something that is an annual cost. Also it puts you that much more upside down on your loan.

Also no I don't want to buy the stupid warranty. Or the dealer adds that they overprice.

Thanks...Honestly I don't have any idea what all these incentives mean. That's just on the sale price sheet I got from the dealer.

What does supplier pricing and/or discount event mean?

I was just guestimating the fees, haven't seen an actual payout sheet. I thought I rememebered having to pay dealer fees when we bought my wife's Tahoe but could be wrong.

Sales tax in Texas is 6.25% so if I went with that sales price would be $1935.

It's not bad. It's actually $500 lower than anything else I've seen but I've really only been internet shopping as I wasn't expecting to NEED a new vehicle. I was going to wait until the end of the model year clearance to see what was going on but if my car really is dead for all intents and puposes I may have to move sooner.

Anyone been getting that $1000 private offer they had going on the Chevy site? I found it last month clicking one of the links in the threads here but it's not happening anymore.

Amen to that. I'm just hoping I can find something a little better or find some other private offers or incentives. Sounds like I'm about 2-2.5K off where I'd like to be.

One other quick question. Has anyone ever bought a demo? What's that all about? Pros and cons?

I found one similar to what I'm looking for at another dealer with 3000 miles on it. They're going to email me details tomorrow. But I've seen these demo deals for around 28K.

Tax is tax, not much you can do with that.

But make sure there are no adder fees. Some dealers like to negotiate a deal then try and add paper work and filing fees once you start doing the paper work. It is a angle they use to pick up some profit.

Once I leave the sales floor and go to close I make sure the price is set. I have walked out on deals before when they started trying to add fees in.

I have bought a demo. After a certain mileage they consider it used. I would ask when the warranty starts. It seems like the demo I bought the warranty mileage started at the miles on the demo not at 0. If the price is right and the savings is right go for it.

What does supplier pricing and/or discount event mean?

Supplier Discount was originally set up for Companies that SUPPLY the Auto Maker. There are some Dealers out there that are offering this discount to anyone I guess. But you may not get it, as most have it to lure in buyers, then when they fall in love with the vehicle, you know what happens after that. So if you have to ask, you might not qualify.

You will be paying tax on the big number, before incentives are subtracted. In other words, whatever price you negotiate off the Total Vehicle Price, or the TVP if you don't negotiate down from there.

I received a $1500 private offer from GM last fall before I bought. Another $1500 in dealer certificates after negotiating a few thousand off the TVP. Then start with any rebates, bonus cash, loyalty cash, trade in allowances/bonuses.
