Sierra SLT Overall Headlight/Driving/Fog Setup

The more I read about the setups the more I think about what my ideal setup should be for my needs.

First, I want a low beam headlight (and any supplemental light) that won't blind oncoming traffic, but provides adequate light, including better side lighting. I'm not keen on the idea of cutting open my headlights and bootlegging in some good projectors. I'd like to hear more about those that have put in a HID kit in the OEM projectors and how the side lighting is.

For high beam/supplemental driving lights, I want wide coverage as well as enough light to safely see to drive/stop a heavily loaded truck at highway speeds (80-85 mph max) for use when there's no oncoming traffic. I want it all to shut down to low beam with the flick of the factory lever.

I'm starting to put together a plan, but hearing some of your setups is always helpful in figuring out where I want to go.

My plan:

PIAA LP 530 LED Fogs for the improved low beam performance and better side lighting. These are true fog lights that won't blind oncoming traffic and could be left on all the time but will be a dramatic improvement over stock. Should have these installed in the stock location later this week. These are wired so the switch is active any time the lights are on (activation wire attached to one of the side-marker lamp wires at the headlight).

For augmenting the brights, Totron TLB3180X 30" curved lightbar with combo beam behind the grill. This will be wired so the switch is active only when the brights are on (activation wire attached to the white wire at the headlight) so simply dimming the lights shuts them off on the road.

That should keep me happy for a while. Eventually when I get an aftermarket steel bumper I’ll probably add another set of round longer-range driving lights and wire them the same way as the lightbar. And if/when somebody comes up with a true plug and play LED replacement for the headlight module I might upgrade to that.

After calling Baja Designs this afternoon, I now have 4 Baja Designs SII lights 2160 lumens each. 2 are wide flat beams and 2 are spot beams on order. I haven't installed them yet. Still thinking about the switching/wiring setup I want.

I don't know what I'm going to do about the headlights and foglights in the end. Maybe nothing to the headlights. I am just not thrilled with the idea of hacking up a headlight assembly and then Gomering up the wiring. I want at least the headlights to have the factory reliability, so maybe no intrusive mods.

The fogs are a different matter. I don't mind replacing the lamp assemblies with something else, but also, I don't see a need for that circuit either.

the HIDs in the the OEM projectors doesn't completely solve the bad side lighting from these projectors, however, it does help to improve it. There is some side lighting with these projectors, just not much, so a brighter bulb will put more light on the sides.

Thanks Mike. I figured they would give some more side light. Probably enough for a low beam driving condition and provide much more light for focused long range beam.

I'm starting to get a plan together. I have some Baja Designs SII wide (40 degree), flat beam, LED lights that I may install in the Fog positions now that I can have them available on for either low beam or high beam with my diode mod. That should provide intermediate distance wider light. I am thinking now of getting some "flood" (75 degree) beam Baja Designs SII lights for behind the grill to go along with the SII spot beams.

Go for it! I think you should set up the spots to work with your fog light switch and with the highbeams, and the wide angle lights to work with your highbeams only. That way, if needed, you can still use your spots without your highbeams being on, just incase if oncoming traffic comes up, the spots are less likely to blind them.
