Ccamp5, your story is very interesting and both encouraging (gM knows what the problem is) and discouraging (the only fix is a new vehicle).

I just got back from a 2 hour test drive where I drive the vehicle at various speeds under three conditions; with the microphones taped over, with the tape removed, and with fuse 48, which powers the amplifier, removed. Each run at a given speed was done over the exact same section of road, so this is a very good apples to apples comparison. I used a spectrum analyzer to measure the sound levels at the various frequencies. There are definite low frequency spike in the signature that are likely the "buffeting". I do not see much difference with and without ANC. There is significantly more difference due to varipying road conditions.

I was going to post that I am very convinced the problem is in the roof. As I posted several weeks ago, smack your headliner while inside the back and you will hear/feel the same noise and pressure. And, this makes more sense, since the rougher the road, the more it will excite the roof issue.

Also, I have the same vibration in the vehicle at all speeds. Feel it in the steering wheel and the seat. And, we picked ours up at the end of Oct, so definitely and earlier build.

This is sickening.....

What spectrum analyzer and microphone did you use? Did you record the data and print out the plot?

Congrats CCamp on the new ride!

**Update** Quick summary: had GM disconnect the ANC and noticed the issue (ear pressure) at lower speeds and had them reconnect the ANC on Tuesday. I swear, the same old ear popping had on my first one (re-purchased by GM) is now back. Upon further review, I am going back to the dealer next week to have him disable the ANC again. After comparing the two (with and without ANC), I would have to say it was better with it disabled.

I would love to just drive my $79k (MSRP) truck down the road without my head pounding and ears popping. Shame GMC for not testing the vehicle better...and even more shame on me for giving them a second chance. My next vehicle will not be made by GM.

All - Buffeting and Shake/Vibration (S/V): Anyone with the S/V I am guessing you have wheels larger than 20? If you have wheels 20 or smaller, put them on and assess the S/V and buffeting. (I’m on California’s Central Coast, if someone was near I have a set of brand new GM wheels and tires you could try). I believe if your vehicle has a S/V and you attempt to mitigate buffeting with the 20sierra14 concept, you will not “fully” achieve his results. Reason, your S/V will cause ANC to "compensate noise" more than if there were no S/V. Ironic, the name of the ANC mics are called "noise compensation" and in actually, they are on the job. 20sierra14, do you have a S/V? Regardless if you have S/V with or without buffeting, stuffing 2.5 cotton balls into the mic well and covering with tape will help with buffeting.

As soon as I pick-up some grilles, the plan is to conduct some fabrication and modification in an attempt to achieve 20sierra14’s results without the tape. It will take a little time because I don’t have the actual mic to use as a reference. I do believe I came across mic dimensions during my research, finding the research will speed the process and be a better product.

jasondenali15 - I have a sight picture of what I believe disconnecting ANC means, but what is the dealer explanation of disconnecting ANC. This should be detailed on the work invoice. Is the dealer concept of ANC a master switch, a master mic, a computer shut-off, what? If none of the above, the work invoice should say "disconnect mics at three separate locations"

I did not get an invoice from my first visit...which now raises a red flag for me. He disconnected the one on the passenger side near the door handle. The dealer told me disconnecting a single mic will disable the entire ANC system. Perhaps like a circuit? Like a pulling a single light off a strand off Christmas lights...

Would you recommend I ask him to disconnect all three? I am confident they will do it...just takes a few minutes to do. I appreciate your help! It appears the folks from GM who monitor this site occasionally can care less about this issue.

Nothing from our's.. Rides perfect, no buffeting, just horrible pressure (w/o the cotton balls)

Most certainly have them disable ALL THREE.. If you just have one disable, it would/should make the system "over-compensate", thus making the pressure worse -- as you stated! It just make sense that it's the ANC creating the pressure! To me, I think it's a "reverb" effect from road noise into the ANC system that's creating the buffeting noise. Just speculation, though.

WOW! I can't believe I actually found this thread. We bought a 2015 Yukon Denali XL less than 2 months ago. My family can't even ride in it, the noise and vibrations are so bad! At the car lot, I had a problem with how it drove immediately and the car salesman said the road we were test driving on was bad. I took it to another road, and it was still bad. He convinced me to change the tires to Michelin for an extra 600 bucks and that should take care of the problem. Unfortunately I went with the idea. No sooner than I got it home, we all started complaining of the vibrations and the pressure in our ears. My wife got her first ear infection and my 2 year old toddler plugs her ears everytime we get in it and complains. I have headaches after riding more than 20 minutes. I took the car back to the dealership and complained, had to jump through hoops and talk to many different people, and finally they glued to roof down and put some insulation in it. I got the 70,000$ car back with misaligned upholstery and dirt spots on the ceiling. The noise and pressure was still there. I dropped it off again and they said they have done all they can, there is nothing wrong. A field rep got involved and doesn't really acknowledge that there is a problem. I am so fed up and disgusted, I don't know what to do. I dropped it off again this week and some other folks are going to ride in it. Just got a call back and they don't really know what the problem is........who do I turn to? A lawyer? Wait for a fix? I will read back through all the posts, but I just wanted to go ahead and get my story up here.......

Dealers are slowly beginning to get on board, maybe they are reading this thread. But, if anyone is taking their truck to the dealer for the buffeting issue, be sure to ask what are they going to, what tells them to do it (GM message), and how are they going to get it done (what will it entail). If they decide to disable/disconnect ANC (not sure of appropriate verbiage), respectfully ask they disconnect all three mics. If the request doesn't work, make contact with the lead technician and demand all three mics be disconnected. You just spent 70K, no is not an acceptable answer. Based on info from members on this thread, one being disconnected will not mitigate the buffeting. Although at this point since we have not disconnected all three mics, research versus hard data says this should have some type of positive impact. Be sure to get an invoice for your record and ours.

20sierra14 – I didn’t think you were experiencing S/V. What is your tire size?

LSUMatt1514 – you are new to the thread but you bring a lot of value. People like me have “paid the money” and laid the foundation of this thread, impossible to get GMs attention. People like you have “not paid the money” and can provide tomorrows input to this thread, will certainly get GMs attention. This is how you and all perspective buyers help us and yourselves; MAKE YOUR POINT, tell the dealer a pre-condition of the purchase of a new Denali will be dependent upon disconnecting/disabling all three mics and showing you the work invoice (don’t look at this as being rude, look at it as being savvy. You are about to drop 70K). You are on the thread so you know what to look for. If the truck “does not” exhibit conditions consistent with this thread, disabling all three mics would be a defining result toward a purchase. Now ensure there is no S/V.

For everyone – disconnecting/disabling ANC is not the fix, if it was, the vehicle would have been designed that way. Regardless of what we come up with on this thread, it is not our intent or responsibility to fix this issue. Our drill is to mitigate the issue at a tolerable level until GM issues a fix.

I've already sent this thread to the salesman we worked with when we recently looked at a Yukon Denali. The next morning, he said he spent the whole night reading this thread and was going to talk with his service dept about the issue, but to his knowledge there have been no Yukons come back exhibiting this problem. He said he would do whatever he had to to make us happy. I made it very clear that I was following this thread and GM's resolution of the issue would define whether we went with a GM truck, or stick with Toyota (would love a Land Cruiser but it lacks so many of the bells and whistles the Yukon has).

There is no way that I'm spending $70k+ right now with so many of you having this problem. I have a newborn and a 4 year old...I can't imagine putting them through this torture, nor do my wife and I have time to run back and forth to the dealership trying to get a truck fixed. Hopefully GM resolves this issue soon. It's an absolute shame.

Me neither. I've wanted a Tahoe or Yukon for many years and have been waiting for this latest version to come out but there's no way I'm buying one when problems like this exist, ESPECIALLY while watching GM do nothing.

LSUMatt1514 / Chris M - good job. I am sure your dealer is just as respectable as the ones that sold us our vehicles and have the same comment, but to your dealer, it's on. A newborn, 4 yr old, do not buy this truck if it exibits untolerable conditions associated with this thread. Armed with the knowledge of this thread, it would be one of the worst decisions you would have made.

jasondenali15 - quoting your comment, "The dealer told me disconnecting a single mic will disable the entire ANC system. Perhaps like a circuit? Like a pulling a single light off a strand off Christmas lights". Tobtek had a single mic disabled and the buffeting was worse. Although looking at the wiring diagram could suggest your assessment of the Xmas lights is possible.

It would be good info to know which mic was disabled in both cases, maybe the wrong mic was disabled. What we know, both instances resulted in negative results.

ChrisM - your comment, "I've wanted a Tahoe or Yukon for many years and have been waiting for this latest version to come out". I am able to mitigate my issue, once we get past this thread, PM me, I'll tell you what these trucks can do.

This may be a stupid question, but I'm assuming there are some Tahoes/Yukons on the road that don't have this issue (in other words there are lemons out there but not all are lemons)? Or...is this a problem with every Tahoe/Yukon, prior to a certain production date, and the issue/phenomenon is just more noticeable to some folks and/or more severe in certain trucks?

I don't recall feeling any weird sensations or hearing any unusual sound when we test drove one. However, I was planning on buying certified preowned and this thread has almost certainly destroyed that idea...

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
