Hi all, new to forum, but not new to Chevys. I am in the market for a new tow vehicle for a new boat I have coming in the spring. I have had a 2007 ltz Tahoe and now a 2011 ltz suburban, both of which have been excellent high mileage vehicles for me. I am / was in the market for another ltz suburban but this thread has me completely freaked out over potential next purchase. I drove one today trying to hear what others on here have experienced, I did not replicate it with the one I was driving. My question is are the ones prone to this born with it so to speak and you hear the issue from day one, or does something "break" over time. The one I drove did not have the issues spoke of on this forum at present, but not sure if they will develop and admittedly the one I drove (build date of October 30 2014) does not have all of the options (and color) that I would like to have....any input on this is greatly appreciated as to what I might expect next.....thanks in advance for your guidance!!!!!!

breckenridge - All folks are not experiencing this issue, but a person would have to know what is. The thread has evolved but the first two post are good initial descriptors. Pressure/Buffeting/Shaking/Vibration are now issues on this thread with mostly pressure and buffeting dominating the day. Texassweetea test drove the most and would probably say you would know it from day one. You may get fortunate and find one without any issues, but one thing not in your favor, GM extended model fullsize SUV's seem to have the problem more versus the shorter versions.

I can say with some certainty that I did not notice it on the Yukon we test drove before ordering ours, and I did not notice it the day I picked ours up from the dealer. We drove it several times over the first couple of days (new vehicle excitement and all) and I did not notice it. I'm pretty sure I would have if it was there. I didn't drive it for several weeks after the first couple of days while my wife drove it daily. When I finally did drive it, I noticed it right away.

 

So for me, it seems that something "broke", for lack of a better term. But, I can't swear to that and to be perfectly honest, I feel there is something inherently "wrong" with these vehicles and it's not a simple matter of something that broke and can be replaced to fix the issue. Something way more systemic and difficult to correct.

 

I don't want to tell someone else what to do, but if I could turn back time I wouldn't have talked my wife out of a Sequoia and into a Yukon, and I'm sure I'd be spending my spare time with my kids instead of dicking around with this Yukon.

Thanks for the replies..... I think I will wait till next year models come out for a couple reasons: 1) they understand and fix the problem that remains ( both the tailgate pop and the buffeting) - I guess GM acknowledging it with a service bulletin is a start, but like others have stated, when I relayed my reservations about buying as a result of this condition, no one knew anything about it at the sales office. And whoever provided the detailed / pictured (the one on page 8) bulletins on this post, I am extremely grateful. I showed my salesman that I do not want my $70k vehicle being torn apart and then put back together with a lot of clue and some c-clamps near the sunroof. I had to provide the bulletin number and then they relayed their was an intermittent issue, not one that resulted in a recall or production stop etc, said it was mainly the Yukon XLs...2). The second reason I may wait is that I am hearing rumblings of a 3/4 ton suburban for 2016. This new boat / trailer will be pushing the comfort level of the towing capacity on the 1/2 ton as it sits at around 7500lbs with fuel, trailer and gear, and I am told that the trailer tongue weight can't exceed 600 lbs with the 2015 towing package on the suburban, already causing me to get some weight distribution hitch of some kind. I do like the the vehicle, but for the money, as most have stated, I can't justify that amount without getting a lot more comfortable about the problem being a non issue. jasondenali15 - make an adjustment (if you did not take the truck to the shop) in accordance with the private message. I have been focusing on pressure, but your comment "You are right on the money with that assessment", infers noise and pressure can be managed at the same time, at least in your truck. After the adjustment, provide noise and pressure percentages now compared to right after the dealer installed the plugs.

I wouldn't let what you read here deter you completely. Use this info to make informed decisions and test drive thoroughly, but don't be fooled into thinking this is wide spread. This forum represents a very small percentage of buyers. I, along with many others, don't have any issues. There's a valid reason your dealer didn't know about the problem.

I was wondering if you guys have a roof rack with the cross bars installed? I was one of the first to get the 15 Suburban and had that wind buffeting in cabin drone noise...I installed the roof cross bars and I'm not sure if that solved my issue or if it was when the dealer replaced my side roof bar.

Hey Sub, your truck had the issue without roof racks? You had roof racks installed and it went away? Is that accurate? I am getting desperate for a solution before I start a buy back again. I really want to love this truck...

blackout07 - give Breckenridge more credit than that, he wasn't a fooled customer, he was informed before he logged onto the thread. I, like you, are not experiencing these issues, but the few that are voicing their frustration is no indication this is not widespread. Also, the dealer is trying to make a sale.

I don't believe I implied he was a "fooled customer." That's not what I meant. My comment was based on the fact that anyone who frequents these forums or does a little reading before buying not see this thread and and think these vehicles are rolling disasters. There's a lot of pages here, but how many problem vehicles? GM dominates the suv market. Sales are what? 100k units or more a year? Happy people rarely go searching for a place to talk about the greatness of their vehicle unless they're an enthusiast. But people do go searching for a place to complain when they're unhappy. This thread represents the latter and represents a negligible number of problem vehicles. That's just the plain truth based on what's available on the all mighty web. One can assume it's widespread I suppose but that's just that, an assumption. There's some problems. That's obvious based on this thread. But no one should read this and run away.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
