Interesting. I've observed on mine that the noise and buffeting occur when the heater fan is on. I also turned the hvac system completely off and didn't seem to make any difference, but I might play around a it more with that if someone else has seen an affect.

 

Can anyone with the buffeting problem and a sunroof report back if it happens with the sunroof tilted open? If this were a pressure issue, perhaps a partly open roof would relieve it?

 

@bamamike: I'm encouraged that GM is taking notice and that action is being taken.

You guys can go back and read my earlier post to review my issues, but here is an update. Apparently there was a regional meeting yesterday for all service managers in my area. GM is aware of this issue and they have some type of machine they are sending out to all the dealers. They are doing training on this machine and it detects vibrations and noise to determine its origin. The regional GM service liasion drives a yukon and is experiencing the same issue. Apparently most service shops are now acknowledging the problem. We will see if this helps find the cause and an eventual solution to each case. They obviously have multiple items causing the problems. This release of this machine only tells me they don't have one solution or one root cause. I will keep you guys posted on what happens to mine. I've patiently waited to see what action my dealer takes and they told wait till after this meeting to proceed. I appreciate you guys trying to solve this issue but I don't have the time or expertise. I'm going to leave it up to the dealer to solve it or they can have it back. We like the Yukon XL but cant drive it this way. Mine is more of an annoyance than anything and there is no way I can continue to drive on longer trips. Mine is really noticeable at 45mph.

Bamamike, what part of the country are you in? Here in NY every dealer I ask about this issue say they never heard of it. I put in an order for a 2015 Suburban back in November and it still has not come in so I just cancelled it. I'll wait and see what happens.

Alabama, and all your dealer has to do is look at the service bulletin on the roof bows. I'm sure there are other bulletins regarding the noise. A salesman is not going to ackowledge it while your looking at them but the service department is aware of the issue.

 

After the regional meeting yesterday there were fixes discussed one was replacing something on the back axle maybe a bent or wrong angle on a pinion?? The other had to do with the drive shaft. GM knows about the issue maybe your dealer hasn't had any complaints locally but its out there. Mine will be going to the shop in about 2 weeks, they have another they are starting on next week. I will keep you posted. They are going to start with the drive shaft and axle then go to the roof bows last.

So now the "explanation"...
So they started where they all start. The tires. Road Force revealed some abnormalities, exact readings I'm unaware of, but adjustments were made. They drove the truck and still detected vibration with the GM vibration detector and their butts. They went to the rear tires and re balanced them on the "NEW" laser balancer and found nothing out. Remounted the wheels, drove it, was worse. The tech simply rotated the rims on the studs 180 degrees and drove it again. NO VIBRATION!

What the hell? So now the theory is the hub centric wheels don't mount perfectly everytime or could be sensitive to even torque during installation. The dealer believes the wheels them selves could be the problem. Being the second set, it could be a manufacturing issue.

Yes, very interesting. But, wouldn't explain the vibration in mine, because on mine, the vibration virtually goes away when the road is extra smooth. So, the vibration itself seems road roughness induced, if that's somehow possible.

Hey All,

I have chronicled the ear pressure issues at length. The GPS stopped working a week ago and yesterday the truck started vibrating so bad when I shifted into "4 High" because of the snowy conditions. I had to pull over because the truck was shaking so bad. It has 1600 miles. This is the truck I want. But at some point, I have to come to terms this is just a bad truck. Anyone else having as many problems in addition to the pressure? I'm so disappointed...this was the truck I wanted as soon as I saw the concept of it.

Jeez, WTF! Haven't experienced any other issues with 4wd on mine. We have been leaving in in 4 Auto for the winter, but I did switch back and forth to 2 WD and didn't notice any difference. Haven't put it in 4Hi more than once or twice, but don't recall much issue.

 

Do you usually leave it in 4Auto?

 

Sounds like something mechanical so no reason not to expect a the dealer can fix it.

 

For those that don't know, Do Not leave it in 4 Auto year round. The front differential will wear out at about 60,000 km for some reason. Don't know exactly the deal, but something doesn't disengage in Auto and wears out prematurely. I believe there is even something in the manual about it.

I am looking at a 2015 suburban not sure after reading about these issues. I remember reading somewhere about the mag. ride control on the LTZ for having problems like adjusting shocks to a very stiff ride, was wondering if this could be part of the problem. I might just wait or search for a low mile 2014.

So a small update on our 2015i Escalade. It went back to the dealership yesterday for the "new redesigned" shocks, and a laundry list of other little things.

So as I'm getting the loaner car, this service Tech approaches me. Turns out he saw my name on my file, we went to middle and high school together. He has been with this dealership for decades. He was asked to take a ride in our Lad, and see if he could hear what I'm experiencing.

I noticed as soon as they pulled our vehicle up into the service drive, he was down looking at the small print on the tires. As we pulled out of the drive way, the road was the perfect condition to experience the booming sound. The road has a sieries of small stutter bumps. He immediately looked at me and said I can hear it, and feel it in my ears. As we drove, he was telling me that these new SUV's are using the same technology as the new trucks. The new trucks are all having the same problems and issues as the SUV's. Vibrations, noise and sound issues.software and transmission problems.

He reiterated exactly what my belief has been all along. With GM trying to make these like a Euro sport SUV they have made the new chassis overly stiff, put in incredibly firm shocks on the trucks, and put huge wheels and tires with no sidewall compliance on these things. The combination of the wheels, tires, frame, and overly firm suspension components are radiating through the chassis into the cabin.

GM has and are installing the updated shocks now on our Veh, BUT GM has a team of engineers working on a whole new magnetic ride control shock that should be available in the next few months that should change everything for many of us. As mentioned before, the tires are a huge issue as well. GM has put these rock hard tires on these vehicles for a "sportier" ride and better fuel economy. But as a side effect has created a rock hard ride and sound/vibrations telescoping through the entire vehicle. Here's a recommendation for General Motors. BMW has known their clients for years with the sport-utility market. With The X5's they have offered Sport packages, and LUXURY packages. Which offers in each package either firmer suspension and low-profile tires, or on the luxurypackage offers more sidewall compliance on the tires, softer seats, and much softer shocks. GM should take note of how BMW has been doing this for years! Not all buyers/owners of these new SUV's want a rock hard ride. LoL, there's a dip in a local freeway that will send the occupants in our Escalade into the roof of the vehicle, for there is absolutely no rebound control in the shocks on our truck.

My other big gripe is the truck acts as though its "lumbering" or feels like it's in 15th gear while driving slow around 20 mph on residential streets. Or if you roll slow around a corner there isn't and clean precise power delivery. Again in this condition it feels as though it's been way too tall of a gear. The tech explained with these new electronic eight speed transmissions, GM has programmed / engineered them to be in a higher gear as a failsafe. They are trying to protect the transmission from being over loaded for better Transmission life. He said he could hook the truck up to the computer and clear out all these codes, but with the current programming the truck will "re-learn" the shift points and go back to the lumbering shuttering mess that it is now.

People WE ARE ALL DOING GM's BETA TESTING! They are not doing anything about these problems/issues until enough complaints are registered through dealerships.

And as I've seen for years being in the car biz. So many drivers just don't know what's is right or wrong with their vehicles. More people aren't complaining to their dealerships, Vrs all of us here for they are simply vehicle ignorant. GM is not going to take the time and spend the money if people don't register the issue with their dealerships.

 

 

If your reading this, and are on the fense weather to buy a 2015 GM SUV or wait for a 2016. WAIT FOR THESE ISSUES TO BE CORRECTED !!!! Do not spend your good money for a vehicle that is frustrating to drive. Inconvenient in every way! Who has the time or energy to take your new 60-100k vehicle repeatedly to your dealership and be treated as though you're a buffoon for asking for these issues to be fixed.

I wish I would've researched and found this forum before spending the money and time for these two 2015 GM SUVs. Interesting enough, the 2014 Yukon we're driving as a loaner vehicle rides like a Cadillac should. It rides nice, doesn't make any of the booming or pressure issues of the 2015's. The only drawback is it looks 10 years dated. I should have done like I originally wanted to do. Find a clean certified preowned 2011-2014 Cadillac Escalade. And saved about 45,000.00.

Tobtek, I completely agree with what your are saying. The entire vehicle package is too stiff and is overly exciting the something in the body that makes the "booming"/"buffeting" sounds and the pressure. GM likely knows what is resonating, but knows darn well there is no easy fix short of scraping the entire platform. And reading the pickup forum, it suffers from the same root issue - stiff ride, vibration, etc. the difference with the pickup is they don't have a massive steel shoebox on top of the chassis that resonates like a guitar box!

 

GM changed many things on this new generation vehicle - everything from the 3 piece welded frame to high and ultra high strength steel for many of the body parts. Going to ultra high strength steel sounds great. Means they can use less of it. Problem is, mass absorbs vibration energy. Make the thing too light and all kinds of vibrations can be excited.

 

I hear you about BMW. But even their Sport ride vehicle will be far superior to this new Gm platform. I doubt there are vibrations and booming sounds! So, GM screwed something up on this design. Not sure if you checked out the link I posted about the 1999/2000 GM pickups, but basically the same issue. Vibrations that they could not resolve. The link has a TSB about the fix, which included a bunch up upgrades (that were done on the 2001-), including different streering box, reinforced mounting brackets, different rubber mounts, to name a few. All to isolate the road vibration from the frame/body. So, I believe there is something very similar going on with this new generation and until GM figures out the path the vibration is taking, and how to isolate/dampen it, there will be no fix.

 

To those of you trying to decide if you should buy one of these, be wary. There is nothing to suggest a new one will be any better.

Well ...Thanks for your replies I think that makes up my mind. I would love to have a new "model" my wife currently has a 2008 LTZ but if I purchased one and ended up with any of these issues I would have to point the finger at myself. I guess the only complaint is the very low miles 2014 LTZ is not a lot less than a 2015 and I think I understand why.

    • That is a fair point, and I agree that trying to log “everything in the truck” would be the wrong direction.   There are a lot of modules and a lot of traffic. If the product became a full-truck datalogger, the amount of data would get huge very quickly, and most owners would never use it.   I think the first useful version would need to be narrow: - powertrain-side event evidence - selected high-value parameters - communication / voltage / reset events - pre/post event window - short report first, raw log only as backup   One distinction I should make is between active OBD/PID polling and passive bus capture. If you are polling PIDs through OBD, then yes: the more parameters you request, the lower the effective sample rate becomes, and you are adding diagnostic traffic to a vehicle that is already busy running itself. With passive CAN capture, the recorder is not asking all the modules for data. It is listening to traffic that is already on the bus. So it does not consume vehicle bus bandwidth in the same way that a scan tool polling hundreds of PIDs would. But your point still applies in a different way.   Even if passive capture does not add bus traffic, the recorder still has limits: - processing rate - storage rate - timestamp accuracy - decoder workload - event filtering - report size - user attention span   So the answer cannot be “log everything and let the user figure it out.” The product would need to store enough raw evidence to be useful, but only decode, graph, and present the important parts around the event.   A practical report should probably show: - what triggered the capture - how much pre/post data was preserved - which selected parameters changed - how those values compared to baseline - whether the same pattern happened before - whether any voltage, reset, bus-off, lost-message, or communication fault occurred - selected graphs around the event - raw data only as supporting evidence   So I agree with you. More data is not automatically better. The real product is the reduction from raw data into a useful event report.
    • That makes sense, and I agree with most of that.   I think the product would need both: 1. a default powertrain template, so it is useful out of the box; 2. user-selected priority parameters, so the owner or shop can choose what they want to see first.   Different users are going to care about different things. One owner may care about oil pressure and voltage. Another may care about misfire trend, AFM/DFM behavior, or U-codes. A shop may want communication events and repeatability first. Your baseline point is probably the most important one. Raw data is not very useful unless the report can show what normal looked like for that vehicle under similar conditions.   The way I would think about it is: - start with a basic known-good baseline - learn normal behavior for that specific vehicle over time - allow the event to be overlaid against baseline - show whether the event was a one-time spike or a repeatable pattern - provide a simple severity level, but with clear limits on what that severity means   For example, early severity could be something like: - Info: event captured, no obvious abnormal pattern - Watch: value moved outside baseline, but not repeated - Warning: repeatable abnormal pattern under similar conditions - Critical: communication loss, voltage drop, bus-off, reset, or severe repeated event   I would not want the first version to say “replace this part.” That would be overclaiming unless there is repair-confirmed data behind it. It would be more honest to say “this pattern deserves inspection.”   On the OBD port question, I think OBD absolutely has a role. OBD is probably the right place for: - DTCs - freeze frame - VIN - calibration information - normal scan-tool parameters - Mode 6 / enhanced diagnostic data if available The reason I am still looking at an ECM-side recorder is that the failure may happen before anyone connects a scan tool. If the owner plugs in a scanner after the event, the pre-event evidence may already be gone unless the ECU happened to save it. So I do not see this as “OBD versus ECM-side.” I see it more like: - ECM-side recorder: always armed, rolling buffer, event evidence - OBD/DLC companion: DTCs, freeze frame, VIN, calibration, normal scan data - phone/cloud: status, notes, upload, report generation, notifications   I agree that phone connection and push notifications would be useful. I just would not want the phone or cloud connection to be required for capture. The recorder should save the event locally even if the phone is not connected. The phone should help with event marking, download, notes, upload, alerts, and report viewing.   For a default GM V8 event report, would this list make sense? - RPM - calculated load / MAP - throttle position - vehicle speed - gear / torque converter state if available - coolant temperature - oil pressure - oil temperature if available - battery voltage - commanded AFM/DFM state if available - actual AFM/DFM state if available - misfire counters / roughness by cylinder if available - fuel trims - relevant U-codes / communication events - bus-off / lost periodic message / module reset / voltage drop events Which of those would you remove, and what would you add?
    • I went to the county a few years back to dispute my property taxes. To do that I hired an appraiser and a lawyer. The County Assessor wished to argue that the homes in my neighborhood the appraiser used were all 'distressed properties" and not representative of the "Market Average".    My response was," Of the 50 homes in our subdivision 43 of them were "distressed properties" under bank foreclosure and as such "Distressed IS the market". Lawyer about choked on his coffee and handed the Assessor the 'receipts'.    I won that case on the evidence provided by the Lawyer and the Appraiser.    We have the same thing going on here. My statements were based on the GOVERNMENTS NATIONAL DATA and yours on local markets in areas of your interest. They are both correct....   Thing is, this divergence was based on NATIONAL and not on LOCAL. I think you even understand that. But like you said, we are both stubborn and hardheaded.    I do not see any advantage to disengagement.  But that said we can step back to compose ourselves. 
    • Trust me I appreciate the comments and concerns. It's what I was looking for to help me evaluate the situation and what I want to do. I have decided to move forward with the BORA hubcentric slip on 3/8" (.375") with the extended lugs nuts. Fedex says they should be here Monday :). Meanwhile, the dealer got the remote start and Patriot spray in bed liner done over the last couple of days. Also, I installed an inline stop/start eliminator today. Starts back up in what whatever mode you shut it off in, so you don't have to hit the button every time you fire up.
