Noise while turning steering wheel

So I've had this noise before while turning the steering wheel on my 2001 chevy p/u, the dealer replaced the steering shaft to a newer design. Maybe it was a recall, I can't remember.

Now at 50k miles my 2010 has started to make the same type of noise. Not really a squeak, more of a rubbing noise that sounds like it's coming from inside the steering column when I turn the wheel left or right. Is it the same thing? Is there a way to grease it?

Could be what I call the rack and pinion "moaning" that is to say either the fluid is low, or your seals are bad in the rack and pinion unit. Does this happen when the vehicle is first started?

Does a 4x4 have rack and pinion?.......I don't think they do.

Does it all the time, hot or cold.

Fluid level/condition good? Might need to add/change fluid.

Fluid looks good and full.

Hello, I had the same issue with my 2008 Silverado, dealer said replace everything but to me it did not sound right, what I did find out by searching is that on the steering shaft after it goes through the firewall has a part number decal that rubbed off to the adhesive which caught on to the rubber of the steering boot which stretched the rubber making the moaning noise, removed the decal, replaced boot no more noise.

Hey 2010 Denali AWD,

Sorry to hear about the steering issues you’ve been experiencing. That rubbing noise is definitely annoying. I’m glad to see that some members have given you their insight and advice. If you decide to get it out checked out by the dealership, feel free to send me a private message. I’d be happy and willing to assist any way I can.

Can you make that a public vs. private message? There are lots of guys with the issue, including myself, without any real "fix", but if you have any insight Eddie it would be greatly appreciated!
