Empty space under hood behind drivers headlight (6.2)?

My 6.2L has a pretty large empty space under the hood behind the drives side headlight, and according to the manual it's for the extra battery in the HD's 6.0L diesel. My step-father's 1997 Chevy 2500 has a weatherproof storage box under the hood that was perfect for keeping an extra quart of two of oil, a couple hand tools, gloves, etc. and I would really like to have the same thing in my new truck. Do any of you know of any aftermarket storage boxes that are made for that space, or one that will fit that space?

You could put a metal box in there and use it for an oven. Bake some taters, warm up some leftovers, kinda like a crock pot.

All kidding aside, think about what you might really need. My thought is a a/c freon charging hose and a paper clip might actually come in handy if you're unlucky enough to develop a leak in the a/c on a trip. I was. Don't store a can of Freon under the hood.

Gloves to change a flat is a good idea.

A real jack should be on your list along with a snatch strap. But those won't find in that box.

Candidates for the list start getting skimpy for me after that.

Check a marine supply store. They have battery boxes.

You shouldn't really need an extra quart or 2 of oil like back in 1978. In fact if you need to add any oil within 10K miles in these trucks.. you likely have an issue. My truck is at 7K since the last oil change.. hasn't burned a drop.

But I get what you are saying.. that is a nice big spot just begging to be used. But I'm not sure what you could really put down there that you just wouldn't keep in your truck box or something. In addition, it does it hot in there.. so you need to be careful what you store under the hood.

Yeah, I'm not going to be keeping a quart of oil in there hopefully for at least for another 100k miles or so, I was just saying oil as an example. My step-father's truck has over 280k miles on it and that's just what he used to keep in there (now my brother). For my new baby, I was thinking maybe a jug of washer fluid, gloves, some bungee cords, and rope/ratchet straps.

For my uses, I'm thinking of putting a spare battery in there like I did in my 08.

If you aren't going to put a spare battery in there, maybe a set of jumper cables.

Perhaps a chain to help someone out of a ditch, or some tie down straps for hauling things home from the swap meet, a bottle jack for changing a flat. How about using a military ammo box, it should be water tight.

Someone here got a marine battery box and used that for storage.

Nice space, but I really don't want to pop the hood to pull out bungees or straps. Now a set of jumper cables would be nice. You have to open the hood for that anyway.

I would just get a plastic battery box. Wouldn't be bad for jumper cables.

I have kept a set of jumper cables under the hood of every truck that I have owned since 1976 with the dmax I had to bunge cord them to the top of the electrical box on the drivers side but after 55,000 miles they have not been lost or caught on anything yet. I noticed the last time I used them that I need to replace the bunge cords becasue they are getting streched out. :jester:
