Diff capacities

I have a 2014 Silverado 1500 LTZ 4x4 with the 5.3L engine.

 

I just spent 30min digging through the manual looking for how many quarts of diff fluid I will need to change the fluid in the front and rear axles.

 

I now have 4872 miles and want to change them both at 5000...

 

Problem is: the manual only lists what fluid you need... Not how much. But they list the engine oil, transmission and transfer case capacity? Why not the diffs?

 

Does anyone know how much 80W-90 fluid I will need for the front axle? And how much 75W-90 I will need for the rear?

Use 75w-90 in both

GM uses a synthetic 75w-85 in the rear and dino 80w-90 in the front diff from the factory. I'm wondering if I should run the GM 75-85 in both or M1 75-90 in both.

I am running 75-90 Amsoil Severe Gear in both. No issues. Your call though.

I have the g80 locker. Does it require special fluid? Or additive? Is it a mechanical or disc locker??

No additive required, mechanical locker and any additive added can have a negative effect on it operation. Flat out, its not needed.

 

Additives are designed to be use in Limited Slip differentials which are normally installed in cars, performance cars for the most part.

Why do you want to change the fluid at 5000 miles?

Mine didn't look great when I did the ring and pinion swap at 3500 miles. Wasn't milky but had a whitish tint to it, also looked like it had glitter in the oil from metal. Front looked good but it had hardly no 4WD time at that point.

Ive built diffs for rock crawling. Diffs breaking in create a lot of heat and wear particles. Ive done 1000 mile changes before. But on street vehicles. Already filled with syn lube. A 5 or 10k initial change is good. Then you can go 30k+ intervals depending on towing racing etc use.

1500 trucks, for all rear axles use GM 75w85 high efficiency synthetic gear lube part #19300457. Front axle is 75w90 synthetic part # 88900401.

    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.                 
    • It also depends on what criteria someone is using for “best” when talking filters.  Are we going off best efficiency?   Best quality/QC?  Etc. because the two may not mutually exclusive.

    • I'd guess that it's because they are Mann-Hummel filters since about 2016, they own Wix and are mostly all made in China now.
