Knepp1bj Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 I don't want to put this in the towing section because i do not believe it will be seen as much. Looking at new GMC 1500....35 foot (37 with hitch) trailer weighs 7,300 lbs loaded down as per cat scales. Might add 100-200 more lbs when the baby is born here in a few weeks....so the big question, a regular 1500 at 9,600 lbs with the 3.42 rear end where i can get a screaming deal on a 2014 or wait and order a 2015 with max tow and get over 11,000 lbs?I am getting rid of a 2500 and am not interested in any weight police telling me I need a 2500, we tow a few times a year and most of the time park the trailer at the wife's family's cottage for a few months so really looking at a nicer ride and better MPGs again
Spurshot Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 You're not gonna get a nicer ride in a Max Tow than your 2500 IMO. Been there. I went down from a 2500 to a Max Tow 1500. It rode just as hard if not harder. But the mileage should be much better than a 2500. The big differences between a regular and Max will be the rear springs, rear axle size and gear ratio.
Knepp1bj Posted September 22, 2014 Author Posted September 22, 2014 I went from a 1500 to a 2500 and it just isnt what i need or want anymore. I am going back to a 1500 regardless of a 9,600 or a max tow. I think i an leaning towards getting a max tow. like i said i am under weight at a CAT scale reading of 7300 lbs and we only tow a few times a summer and park it most of the summer.
Spurshot Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 I think a 6.2L 8 speed would be a nice way to go. That 8 speed should have a gear for every speed and never let it lug down. I think you'll be fine with any of the models as long as you go with 3.42 or better gearing and have a 5.3L or 6.2L.
fuse36 Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 3.73 max tow. I just traded my 3.08 for Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
scott19677 Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 " Might add 100 to 200 pounds when the baby is born" Man that is gonna be one BIG baby. Just kidding, I knew what you meant . Max tow , thats what I would do.
Knepp1bj Posted September 22, 2014 Author Posted September 22, 2014 Thanks for the responses, I think I will wait for a max tow. Local dealers cant find me a 14' with the options I am looking for within 500 miles. I frequent a lot of forums and this one is one of the best. People are more realistic, I posted the same question on the camping forum and was not received as nicely.
KARNUT Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 If its a big screaming deal, get it add airbags and a gear if you have to. Your already going to have more HP, your not towing enough to sweat it.
peejaykay Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 I think at 7300 the 3.42s will be fine. I looked around for a max tow for awhile, ended up settling for a NHT in colors/options I didn't really want but its growing on me. 39,700 on a 47,150 MSRP truck, last week. You can do much better on a 3.42 LT. Probably around 35-36 for a CC.
fuse36 Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Go with max tow. I've owned both 2014 silverado now and max tow is the way to go. U get more then just lower gears. Heavier duty leaf springs, enhanced cooling radiator, revised shock tuning, increased RGAWR, 9.76 rear axle. Sent from my iPhone 6 using Tapatalk
bills Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 I have the max tow with the 6.2L engine and couldn't be happier. The 3.73 gear and extra torque of the engine really come into play when we take trips through the high country. Our trailer weighs about 7,000 lbs.
nards444 Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Go with the max tow. If your towing something of significance with a half ton anything over 6-7k, you want to be doing it in 3.73s and nothing less. Can it be done with less sure, but definitely is not optimal
