P0466 P0171 and "carbon removal

Recommended Posts

Hi folks new here, was for years a Dodge diesel owner. Last 3 years Silverado, 4wd, v8 , Z71. Fantastic truck, best I ever had.

I had a check engine light come on so I went to the selling dealer for a check up. 3 months past warrantee. They found p0466 and P0171 Ok so far, then Service writer tells me that in addition some replacement parts etc. ($427) I need, "carbon removal treatment" for $150. When I asked for what purpose he said the ethanol in gas caused a build up that was causing one of the codes. I pointed out that the truck claims to be able to use E-85 ( never used it). I declined the treatment and he noted my refusal on the bill and warned me that any future consequences would be my problem. Who else I asked?

This is the first vehicle I have owned that was built in this century, so I'm not up on the tech side of it.

So my question is this: is there a valid reason for getting "fuel induction service to remove carbon buildup from combustion chamber and valves"

or just upselling to squeeze cash from customers?

Thanks any info and opinions.

Just get two 12 ounce bottles of Techron, run them through the tank and call it a day. You're not noticing any detonation or pinging are you?

No not at all. The service writer stated that the p0171 required the carbon deal.

Thanks folks, good info. An important fact is that the service writers at this dealer and maybe most/all/many other places are on commission. Thanks again
