Thought I would chime in for the fact i have nothing better i could be doing lol.

Gopro kind of has that wow factor compared to the other cameras mentioned but if it was used strictly for incar no other uses it would be a $300 waste in my opinion.

Also thinking as a theif which is not difficult considering many people have been one at one point in thier days, which would you take? The $300+ go pro or the $50 one? Easy choice. No matter if its hidden or not if the persons breaking your windows out its for a clear reason. It would be damn stupid to break the window of any post 2000 year\make vehicle just to check whats in it lol.

Wait until you come back to the car with a busted window and no camera! Then it might bother you!

All my cars have the cam mounted way up high just below the tinted area of the windshield and behind the rear view mirror. The smaller the cam the less likely it will get noticed.

Anything with a video screen on the back side is way too big.

And a word of advice. Try to park in a well lit parking lot.

My Lexus was broke into 3 weeks after I got it. The camera recorded everything. Unfortunately too dark to make out a positive id.

And don't ever leave anything that looks like it might be valuable in plain view.

This guy was searching cars in the lot with a flashlight. Saw my pilot bag in the rear floor board and I lost 2 windows and 1200 worth of aviation gear! All of which useless to the thief! I got a good description of their car but no plate number and I could tell they were both African.

It's been a year and I've been regularly checking pawn shops, Craigslist and eBay. Police also my things registered in the database and nothing has turned up. I suspect they threw it away.

Not gonna lose sleep over any of this...that's what I got good insurance for and it happens, so be it but I'm not gonna run scared of a common thief. no way!

Once had all four wheels and tires yanked off my C-7 corvette in a private/gated 2nd floor level apartment parking garage in a very upscale part of town. Thieves made off with them in 20 mins so we figured out from the time I'd parked to the time my neighbors sighted the car sitting on wood blocks. After filing a police report, called my insurance company, rented a car, had the dealer pickup the car with a spare set of wheels and a flatbed tow truck, tow it to the dealership put brand new set of wheels and tires on it an re-deliver it back to me 3 days later. Again, no sleep loss. It is what it is and there is nothing any of us can do about a determined thief !

I have a go-pro laying around but even I would worry about theft. Its silver, bright, and not inconspicuous at all. While video quality would be 10x better than what I have right now the lack of loop recording is enough to warrant not using it. If it works for you and your needs thats awesome then.

FYI, I have the GPH3 and it's features including looping video if you want to use it.

Just got my black box g1w in, only came with a cigarette lighter plug but I want to hardwire to a connection that only gives it power when ignition is turned on. Camera will be mounted right behind the rear view mirror so ideally I would want to tap into something on the overhead console. Does anyone have any tips, pictures, or wiring diagrams that would help me out. I have a few days since I had to order the hardwire kit separately.

Hardwire Kit for reference,

So I was a loser and read the entire thread and didn't see the answer (or perhaps I missed it) ... Did you ever get around to actually going forward with this? If so, did it/does it work? Does the hardwire kit control the functions of the camera (record) upon ignition?

Thanks!

You can find videos how to hot wire a dash cam on youtube.

Basically you have 3 options:

1. Using the cigarette lighter. This way you can leave the cam running while the truck is parked at work or at the mall. At night just pull the plug and the battery is not empty the next morning. That's what I'd recommend. Easiest way w/o messing with the car electric. It's your call for the cam to be on or off.

2. Hotwire the cam into a "switched" circuit. The cam only runs when the ignition is on.

3. Using a "power box". The power box is wired into a 'hot at all times circuit' and the cam is running 24/7 until the power box detects a drop of the voltage below (I think) 11.8V. Then the box will cut the power to the cam.

I ordered the hardwire kit for my camera but haven't had the time to install it. Most likely than not I'll have a shop do it. I don't feel like spending a day pulling the interior apart.

See my post where I have a photo of the cam plugged into that AC outlet on the lower area of the dash. It turns my camera on and off with the key.
